Little Noobie help Clutch Smell.

Ok. I just bought an 06 IX MR. It got delivered late last night. I am thinking the transport company may have had some fun with the car.. There is a service engine light on that wasn't there before the car was picked up.... So I drive the car home and when I pull into my driveway I notice a strong smell of Clutch or brakes.. I take the car around the block again and drive it gingerly. No smell. I then get the car into full boost and I smell the odor again.

the car has the Works TR 340 kit and a ACT MB7-HDSS clutch. I am new to the evo world but not new to DSM's I have read that ACT clutches have a tendency to encounter Clutch Hang. But the prior owner never had this issue. The clutch grabs fine and i don't feel it slipping but man it stinks. I smell it more on the drivers side, I am going to assume that is because the trans is on that side.

I am thinking I can bleed the clutch. Put a SS clutch line on there and maybe remove the restrictor. Any other guesses? I also need to scan the car and find out what this code is.

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
If you smell burnt clutch, you are slipping it too much.

So its driver error? You don't think its anything mechanical? I hope its my driving style. This is my first DSM. I come from the euro world so the clutch does feel different and grabs really high. But I don't feel like i am riding the clutch to get it to engage

I'm thinking that if you're in full boost, the clutch is fully engaged which would eliminate the possibility of driver error. Does it feel like the clutch is slipping under boost or you are just smelling it?

I don't know what the delivery company would do to get an SEL so, the code that's in there would definitely be helpful in figuring out what's up.

As far as the clutch smell goes... I know if I launched mine it would smell for a while afterward. As long as you don't feel it slipping I'd give it a day or two of easy driving and see if it goes away as you get used to the clutch action. If it go away they were probably doing 6K clutch drops before they brought it to you.

Also, Evo's are not really DSMs. I know a lot of people think anything with a 4G63 is a DSM but they aren't. DSM's are the eclipse, laser, talon that Chrysler and Mitsu worked jointly on.

Technically, no, they're not. In all reality, they might as well be. Anyhow, I agree with giving it a day or so to see what happens. It might also just be that the particular brand of clutch that is in there tends to smell after being pushed, who knows. I'd wager to say that if you dont feel the clutch slipping while its under boost, you're fine. Bleed it just to be safe anyway.

I didn't launch the car. I just put it into boost from a roll. So going from 2nd to 3rd gear under full load. That is when I get the smell to start. I am going to scan the car tonight to see what the SEL is.

I know on my VW I can check to see if anyone pinged the rev limiter and how many times. and some other things.

Can this be done on the Evo? Is there anyway to see how the car was driven while in transit?

About the DSM comment. I understand they are different. I have done a complete motor Rebuild on the 4g63 motor so I should say I am familiar with this motor.

Can you feel the clutch slipping before or when it smells? It will be more prevalent in higher gears.

I don't really feel anything slipping at all. Car pulls fine in 3rd and 4th gear. no hesitation no revs in the rpms.

It is stiff going into 3rd then to 4th gear.

I think what you mentioned to me, clutch not fully engaging/disengaging, might be a good possibility.
