Clutch Issues

One of my primary complaints about this car since the day I drove it off the lot was "the smell"
The other was that the clutch felt like it was rated for 1/2 the lb/ft that the Evo produced.
Well, the smell was my clutch cooking. Just confirmed
Now everytime my turbo spools up, my clutch slips. Apparently that was the smell the whole time (for me). Mine's been cooking since I left the lot. But has not been as bad after miles were put on it. I only ever tried "pushing" the car off the line once after about 1500 or 2000 miles and I said I'd never do it again b/c it smoked the mess out of it. I guess that should've been a clue that something was wrong. I've complained about the clutch feeling underrated (for the amount of torque the evo has) since I got it. I guess these should've been clues that something was wrong.
I had to go to the dealership b/c it started slipping in the torque band and they had me test drive another evo, and the first thing I said was wow, this clutch is light, mine doesn't feel like this. One of my favorite things about my car was how tight the clutch was. So apparently, that's a problem.
Don't live with "the smell" thinking whatever it is it'll cook off. In my case it was my clutch cooking off, so get that checked.

How does everyone else's clutches feel? (i know this is relative, but I mean a pretty big difference, my clutch had resistance, you had to push it, the other one was so light that I barely had to rest my foot on it to depress the clutch)
For those with a stiffer clutch, have you noticed "The smell" ???

IMO, the weak clutch is a fuse that they put in to extend the drivetrain reliability long enough to make the warranty period.

btw, worn clutches have a higher pedal effort because the "tipping point" of leverage on the pressure plate is past the sweet spot when the clutch disc gets thin.

With my ix there was a lot of resistance on the clutch took it to the dealer a couple of times and they said it was ok, but every time I tried to put in first fast the car would jerk forward.

When I got the X there was little to no resistance on the clutch but now its getting stiffer and starting to grab more and more from the top.
I don't know weather my clutch is going out or if its normal.
While driving from work today shifting through the gears felt weird. It was real notchy and felt like there was no fluid in the tranny.(don't know if that makes sense). usually when the tranny is warmed up it's smooth shifting...but this time was different.

The smell is normal and goes away after a couple thousand miles. If your clutch is really slipping then you have launched your car too many times or abused it in some other way because no one else is having clutch slippage issues. I hope you get it worked out.

When you guys say slip through the gears, what do you mean? That jerky feelings is either clutch release way to fast or way to late. I still don't understand what you mean slipping through the gears? My clutch did stink, however I hadn't drove stick in over 5 years so I totally blame that one on myself... I will note one thing, it might be your breaks as well, clutch burn and brake pads smell very similar. I've never launched my car nor will I, clutch seems to be great, a little jerky from 1-2 though.

P.S. I don't have the factory reflash either.

clutch slipping is foot completely off clutch. push gas pedal, and engine revs freely (clutch slips) then catches and goes.
I have not launched my car more than once nor abused the clutch. The thing has felt like it does since I left the lot, but only recently started slipping. Something was wrong with it when I got it, and it is now in the shop getting a warrantied clutch and flywheel replacement. If the dealership and Mitsubishi can acknowledge that I did not cause the issue, and they can see the computer records, why do you want to try to start a flame war?
I'm just glad its not everyone's clutch, but there have been enough complaints about the smell and the feel of the clutch from new evo owners that I wanted to share my experience and give others a heads up.
I've driven a MT since I was 12, so I know how to drive. I've never had this issue, I don't rest my foot on the clutch or abuse it in any other way, so don't speak on what you don't know.

sounds like something was inherently wrong with your particular clutch. comparing my evo clutch and tranny to my srt....well there is now comparison....i don't have to fight it into every gear I do notice a slight synchro issue with second gear though....or it could be my dropping the load on the tranny too early. i don't know.

+1...guess the clutch won't hold the 150 shot of NOS. That is an interesting list of things to come, would consult someone before you get too far down the list. Sorry for the off-topic

Kwig, I didn't mean to insult you. I was just saying that 99% of the time when the clutch starts slipping on a low mile car that it is from abuse. Even one improper launch that burns the clutch too much can cause problems, but in your case perhaps there really was something wrong with your clutch from the factory. Welcome to mitsubishi transmissions, lol.

When I received the smell it was due to my error, however my clutch still grabs great! This may have only happened 2-3 times with me burning the clutch, I went on a 5 year hiatus without driving a manual (my clutch skills were weak needless to say)... Although I've never launched my car, I'm surprised someone hasn't shattered their clutch yet. It could be one or the other, maybe a little bit of both? As long as your taken care of, I guess that's all that matters. Maybe re-think about the whole launch phase until you completely get the feel of the cars transmission.
