With the 5 spd you may have to hold 4th for a few extra seconds before going to 5th, because to cover the gap where as on the 6spd you'd have to go 4th then 5th then 6th.

Bottom line the 6th gear isn't the almighty over drive gear, it's basically just like the 5th gear in the 5 spd. There is more to it than that that's just the gist of it.
Never said anything about Gas mileage. Its just my personal Preference to keep the 6sp. I know the risks.

What is your driving style? Did you drag race it? Bang gears? Speed shift? My car currently makes 400WHP on a 6 speed. I do none of the above. I haven't even launched the car once. Should I expect it to last longer?

I personally like the 5sp. For a turbo car, you want longer gears to build boost, that was always my understanding.

I'm sorry I assumed you were referring to gas mileage, on a side note most people who daily drive would prefer the 5spd less shifting, on an automatic. You love the 6spd, that's understandable, I liked mine too it was cool to have but I destroyed 4th then there after I started losing more gears, until it locked up.

I put in a shep trans 5spd, and it was GREAT! after acheiving 711 whp I put about 1000 miles on the tranny and now it feels like mud when going though the gears I have kinda destroyed it as well, SO now I'll be putting in a dogbox.

Good luck with yours!

It's my understanding that the 6 speed will be fine for anyone as long as they perform the following:

Run shockproof fluids in tcase and transmission
Not do any hard launches
Not keep car in 4th gear tooo long
Not have high torque or hp above 450 whp max.

I believe if any of those rules are broken, it may be bye bye to transmission and swap 5speed.
From the pricing I've seen its like 2500 to get 5 speed then 1k to rebuild/install. Give or take a few hundred. I wouldn't upgrade transmission unless the 6spd is dead dead or u plan to drag, or have high tq/hp numbers.

Does the shep rebuilt 5 speed drive as smooth as silk or notchy as crap like a going bad 6spd?

I drive my Evo like it should be driven... Normally and then drag race it time to time and take it to the track.... If you baby ur car and never launch it sure it will last...

Quick shifts but not power shifting on full bolt on cammed evo ix (stock turbo) blew a few 6 speeds with just an exedy stage 2 clutch before I converted to 5 speed w/ a quartermaster twin and never had an issue since and I drag race the car even more now with almost twice the power lvl

I just talked to Jon at TRE for 45 minutes. It was a lucky situation but clearly he is the premier expert on transmissions hands down. He can break it down bolt to bolt gear to gear without breaking a sweat.

He said he was on vacation so he didn't get a chance to finish the gearset for six speed. He will redo it to make gears longer, shot peen, and billet gears. In the end the price will still be 3k he said with billet gears. ETA in october

I asked what is the best thing to do then and he said everything will break if beaten to death no matter what. But to go with the 5 speed if you need it now and his 2.5 rebuild is good enough for 1000 hp. The problems occur when heavy clutch dumps, improper clutch installs and strangely enough a clutch that can handle too much torque is used. Reason being if a clutch with 800 lb/ft max is used when a clutch dump is performed, the drivetrain does not feel the stress of the current tq at that rpm but much more and will have a lot of stress. As a safe point he said keep it to clutches that have below 600 lb/ft as their max tq capacity to be safe.

To shed more light on why crap has been breaking, stress and load were key. 580 tq is the max stock 5 spd can take with good driving. ANy more and it can take it but it's a high chance something will blow and will require parts to be replaced. NOw the 6 speed torque capacity is much less and it's simply not safe enough to dump clutch hard etc. In totality draggin and clutch dumping simply requires a brutally strong transmission if done for long time and if you have hopes of keeping it 150k miles.

I'd have to say go with 5 speed tre 2.5 build new for 3600. Or exchange yours for 500 less.

* I'm just trying to sum up the conversation as best as I can, any detailed questions and give Jon a shout.

2, 3 & 4th are pretty similiar ratio's on the IX transmissions. 5th gear in the 5 speed is about 250rpm higher than on the MR's 6th gear in the 6 speed.

i never had a problem with my 6sp "knock on wood" the cars been modded for over 30k miles now, since 10k miles the car had 331whp/317wtq, few months ago i did some other mods now i'm at 350whp/352wtq and the 6sp does feel strong i dont track the car just a little road racing here and there i have to say that the 6sp feels soo much better then the 5sp.... the 6sp feels more solid compared to the 5sp its very sad that it cant hold as much cause its hard going back to the 5sp after having the 6sp

i do plan on getting a bbk turbo and injectors shortly i hope she holds together lol
