ECU swap

I'm thinking about buying a ECU from a crashed EVO, the price is good, but I was wondering if you can swap the ECU from one Evo to another one just like that? Someone who knows about this please comment.... thanks

yycools,

I think all ECU is key-coded. If you get a different ECU, it will not run your car. You can get the dealer to reprogram the ECU to work with your car, but I don't know if the dealer will want to do it or not.

That's why you can only do reflash by mailing your ECU in. If a vendor can overwrite this limitation, I'm sure they can offered new ECU reflash by sending you an ECU first.

I was just pondering the same thing.. Keep the original ECU stock, and purchase another ECU for flashing.. I'd really like to know how to go about this because its worthwhile.. It has to do with the Immobiliser ECU (Seperate from the ECU) but I am not sure how they work together... I do think that the Immobiliser just tells the ECU whether or not to run.. but it may return a serial number or some other data that you need to "Reprogram" However if thats the case, you can look in the user manual on how to program a new key for the immobiliser, it may be all that it takes.

Another thought, if you know someone who also has an EVO, you guys can try to swap them and see what happens..

I really think this is worst idea. You are messing with electronic. Any problem will cause both car disable.

I posted this in the works forum a few weeks ago. Note that the works guys don't think that this is possible w/o dealer involvement. Obviously they don't support this.

My reading of the shop manual says that this possible. You just need to get the keys lined up between the two ECUs. With a new price of >$600 from a dealer I wasn't about to test this out.

If the ECU is cheap enough, its worthwhile to have a backup without a flash on it though.. I'm willing to try it if I can get my hands on an ECU either new, or from a wrecked Evo..

If you read the shop manual related to the immobilizer and engine ECU there is nothing about a VIN number in the engine ECU. In fact they say "ECM has an encrypted code for immobilizer-ECU, and the encrypted code is registered in the immobilizer-ECU and ignition key."

This process requires the Mitsubishi scan tool.

Thats what I had figured.. I do know that there is wiring that goes from the PCM(ECU) to the immobilizer ECU.. But that is as far as i researched it in the shop manuals and documentation I had access to.

It did occur to me that most turbo-timers and an alarm with a remote start, would somehow have to bypass the immobiliser.. Installing a immobilizer defeat device could allow you to run with any ECU..

I tried to find some examples.. but as I was looking I realised that it might not make much of a difference..

I tried this a few months back actually (mid January). I had a red Evo that I killed that had a WORKS P2 flash on it. I took it out and put it into my new Evo. I would turn the key, but the engine would never start. I put the old one back in and things were fine.

no this will not work because of the key- immobliser. the dealer or the owner book will not tell you this. I took an ecu out od one evo and put it in another and it would not start. it could be done but a real pain in the ***.
