Acceleration problem - AUGH

Evo 8. 100,054 miles.

All of a sudden a few days ago I noticed that when I hit the gas to accelerate, not sure if it's just when the turbo kicks in or not, the RPM's will go up but the car will hesitate to go faster for a 1/2 - 1 second or so and then will kick in with the acceleration. Any gear.

I put fuel injector cleaner in the tank but that hasn't helped anything. I changed the air filter, no go. I haven't done anything else yet.

A bit worried its the turbo unit but maybe its something else.

Any ideas?

What do you have for a clutch in the car ? Rising RPMS with no accelration sounds like slipping clutch.

to test if your clutch is slipping

fifth gear at 2k rpm...floor it

if the rpm jump up and the speedo doesn't...your clutch is on it's way out

I have similar problem with 2006 IX, 44K miles. just started one day...

Acceleration is smooth up to apprx. 3500rmp,
then quick (0.5 sec) jump to 4000rpm, with speed increase,
back down to 3500rpm and continues to accelerate normally

This is not happening during gear changes, but few seconds after when speeding up.

i cleaned MAF sensor just in case, but problem persists.

only mods to care are intake and U/L IC piping. using stock BOV. No crazy launches or clutch abuse; used enthusiastically as daily driver

tried the clutch test above^ no slip...

Could use help with a fix

adding to last comment...

if i keep rpms above 5k throughout shifting, no problem, just grab and go.

I'll add symptoms if i notice anything esle i think may be related to determining root problem

Sounds like a boost leak for sure.

Also since you think it could be the turbo....have you noticed any smoke out of the exhaust?

I drove around some more and it doesn't happen if I accelerate slowly in any gear, only happens when I floor it and the turbo kicks in...the RPM's go up for a 1/2 second but no more power, then all of a sudden it lurches a bit and the power hits and it accelerates normally. Happens more often as with the guy above in 3rd gear and higher.

I will call West Werks and see if they can check it out. The boost leak theory sounds good....at least I hope!

Did you try this?

It sounds like your clutch.

It's most likely the clutch. Do exactly what chaotichoax say and you'll know for sure.

Same problem with my IX, when everything kicked in, some serious hesitation by the car to jump with the RPM's. Upgraded to the Excedy Twin HD and Flywheel. Problem solved. I would investigate the clutch first...

I am just now remembering to post an update... I did the boost leak test and found that my TB shaft seals are leaking. Parts are on way to fix that problem...

As far as the clutch goes, i'm waiting for an opening at Shepherd Transmission. The rpms still jump when accelerating, and it's gotten worse. By the time it's fixed, I will have forgotten how fun the car is to drive! Feels like I'm driving in slow motion since i can't accelerate.

I had a similar issues when my coils went bad.
I thought boost leak or slipping clutch, but when I had my car tuned found out it was the ignition.
I went with Coil On Plugs from Sparktech, and it runs as smooth as ever.
