Will a 3" intercooler be enough?

My goal for the Evo 9 is 400-420whp. I really want to get the new nisei competition intercooler but wife and I are trying to buy a new house so I will have to cut some corners. I see quite a few ETS 3" used intercoolers for sale more often then others.

Would that be a smart chose for my power goals or should I get 3.5"+ one?

Thanks

The stocker is perfectly capable for your goal level. If you intend to keep it around 400 then save your money. It's not worth it if you're going to run only 22 psi and especially with Chicago's cool weather. However, I just installed my Nisei comp. intercooler and it was totally worth the 600 bucks. Looks killer behind the bumper!

i have the ets 3.5 fmic and making around 430 on a Dynojet so i would think that 3.0 is adequate enough to support that offer.

bluebanana23, the stocker probably can handle the power but it heat soaks in the summer time (great in winter). After couple good pulls in the summer the car just stops pulling. I just want to get an intercooler that won't heat soak in the summer and I'm not sure if a 3" will be sufficient.

Man that nisei does look good behind the bumper

If your planning to tune the Stock EVO 9 Turbo then the ETS 3" will do just fine, But you would need quite a few bolt'ons to achieve over 400 whp on a Dyno Jet. My suggestion is to go with the 3.5" (more air flow) model as it will do the same as the 3" but it will carry over nicely if you decide to go with a bigger turbo. Right now I'm currently looking to jump into the New AMS 3.55" Intercooler for my Turbo upgrade. All in all 3.5 is becoming the norm for evo's as not much people stay with there stock turbos.

You definitely need a 3.5" or bigger. The problem is as stated above, at that power level you should have the greatest cooling efficiency possible to make your car happy, the stocker is over its limit at that point and the 3" is starting to struggle because of the heatsoak and if you wanna upgrade your turbo in the future, all the more reason to get a 3.5" or bigger. Pm me if you have any other questions or pricing on anything, ill try to reply back ASAP.

I do plan on getting a bigger turbo to reach my power goal. Guess I need to just get a 3.5"+ one.

There you go...besides buying parts twice is the worse thing you can do, get something that will meet your goals at the beginning and save some money in the end.

- Good Responses! If you have any doubt and might upgrade your turbo, go for the 3.5"

Thanks!
