When to change Intercooler and some extra

Hello!

I'm looking for a bit of information or opinions on a few mods I'll be getting in the first few months of the new year.
First, I come from an SRT-4 (I know, your favorites). I went semi crazy with that one as I put a Stage 3 turbo in it and every bolt on accessible.

With the Evo X, I'm just looking to add a bit more and leave it there. I already have a turbo back exhaust and will be getting an intake soon. Soon after I planned on going for a tune and just leaving it there, hopefully @ or close to 300whp.

My question is, how good is the stock Intercooler? I remember back in the SRT-4, once you got close to 300whp, you knew you would benefit quite a bit by getting an upgraded intercooler. Is there any particular threshold that you guys have identified as the moment to switch intercoolers? Is the stock one good? or restrictive?

Depending on your answers, I might get an intercooler before a tune, or might not get an intercooler at all. My goal is 300~ give or take. Will I need, or would I benefit substiantially from an intercooler?

Thanks for any help!

I think the stock IC is good enough for what you want. A bigger core will give you lower temperatures and provide better protection against heat soaked.

Just look in this section; there is a lot of information on FMIC.

Later, Ken

You should be ok with those mods and the stock IC. But this car does run hot, so for me a bigger IC was just piece of mind for me as it does drop the temps of the charge quite a bit.

Thank you very much for the answers. It seems I'll hold off on the IC for a bit.

I had another question however:Sorry if this is semi newbish.

Like Isaid abiove I come from an Stage 3, SRT-4. You might or might not know that the Stage kits provided you with an ECU that monitored everything at all times. So if one day it's very hot and muggy, and the next it was freezing, you could still "punch" it and have no issues with running lean. You had that piece of mind of knowing that the ECU had everything under control and you could do whatever you wanted to, somewhat.

I'm looking for something similar for the EVO. Hence why I havent purchased any MBc/EBC yet. Which tuning software do you suggest as the best for what I'm looking for?

If I have to sacrifice 10hp in order to not have a to-the-max tune but be safe and be able to "use" the car in 80 degree or 30 degree weather, so be it.
Reflash? Tune? Cobb? chip?

Either ECUtek flash or COBB will flash the car and keep the safety parameters built in by Mitsubishi. I think ECUflash will do the same, but you have to know what your doing with that one, or get it done by someone who does.

Prior SRT4 owner also. I am not a fan of MBC since they will most likely cost you to overboost, same thing with the SRT4. I know the stage computers help alot with MBC, but this is a bit different. If you want to go that route, i say get a EBC and when you get it tune have them installed it. They put two settings on them(depending on the model) one for high boost and one for low boost. So winter run low boost, summer run high boost.

the stock X ECU does this already (it has different maps). When using ECUFlash (and I assume EcuTek), you will get this same functionality.

Personally, I don't think a boost controller is really needed on an X and if anything can cause more issues down the line (like when it gets cold you need to turn it down... forget and BOOM!).

Thank you very much for the answers all! Appreciate the input and help

Going to look @ the Cobb AP which looks very neat and also for an ECUtek flash. See which one I prefer going with. Not sure who offers an ECUtek flash.. AMS?

Go with AMS for everything. Quality, Prove Performance and Reliability. I have a 2004 Evo 8 with all their bolt ons and a tune by Aaron and Lucas here in Washington on 92 octane and my car is a beast 350whp. You already have a great car so congrats and welcome to the Evo World , but seriously give your car the best. AMS parts and a tune you will be very very very happy. Specially when you hit 11s

Good Luck man
