help: Clutch or Sychros??? or WTF is it???

I've been reading a few threads on this subject, but need some clarification...

When my car is in motion and I'm shifting from 2nd to 3rd (clutch all the way down of course), a grinding sound and feel is present before the shifter goes all the way in. After it is in 3rd, it drives like normal. Clutch pedal is at factory set height.

-This only happens when the car is in motion and shifting 2nd to 3rd.

-When the car is idling, sitting in the driveway, and i shift from neutral to 3rd, it does NOT grind.

previous threads suggest sychros going bad, but my friend w/ an STi had a similar prob and a new clutch fixed it. Also have another friend with a Civic turbo, that made that same fix for the same problem.

Plz help... just want this fixed soon whether i just buy a new clutch kit or ship my tranny out to Shep......

The gears won't grind sitting in the driveway because the drivetrain isn't spinning. You can only grind gears if you're in motion.

Try adjusting the clutch. If that doesn't help then it's probably your synchros.

I'm not going to armchair diagnose your problem, but I would say take it to a local shop and have a tech go for a ride in it and listen to the sound.

That should help and cost you nothing.

First thing to do is check clutch pedal free play. You want to have the absolute minimum free play (a tiny bit is needed) to get as much clutch disengagement as possible.

My 3rd does the same thing, but its fine at higher RPM's, so I'm thinking its the clutch pedal adjustment. Try that and see what happens. Again best bet would be to just have a tech ride along with you and see whats up.

If a synchro is bad enough, it will grind sitting in the driveway.

You can double clutch when you shift to 2nd to 3rd and it shouldn't grind. Rev match from 4th to 3rd and you should be fine.
