GL-4 in '05 LSD Trans?
I want to change the drivetrain fluids and I still have the AMSoil 75w-90 GL-4 laying around which I was going to use in my '03 Evo. So I am able to use that in the '05 even though it does have LSD? I always thought LSD's need GL-5 fluid.
Also, just get get this straight, 75w-90 in the trans, and OEM DiaQueen LSD (SAE 90) in the T-case and rear diff? I think that's right.
Two years ago, a Mitsubishi service advisor told me other wise. I think maybe to use non-LSD gear oil in the T-case, but that was on my '03 with VCD. I can't remeber but it was different from what I remember reading.
Also... not to make this post any longer
I understand there are millions of "whine" threads, and no matter how many I sift through, I'm still not confident I can relate to their exact problem.
I'll try to be VERY specific. I've started to notice a slight on throttle whine at 75mph in 5th gear. And by on throttle I mean like 5%, cruisng at 75mph. I let off and hear nothing. At lower speeds it's opposite. Around 45mph in 4th and 3rd gear I'm starting to get decel noise, which isn't consistant. It doesn't always do it, and when it does, it's louder on some occasions than others. The car may have always done this. The only times I notice are when the windows are up. I've been keeping the windows up since the temperature outside is dropping. But today, it seemed worse. "Seemed...."
I have never launched this car. I do drive the car hard, but never abuse the drivetrain. Today, I've started to notice, when I blip the throttle to downshift and re-engage the clutch, I hear a "bouncing" sort of whine, like there is a lot of back-lash in the ring/pinion.
Like I said, I've never abused this car. Not sure about the previous owner. When I test drove the car I didn't hear any unusal whining in the t-case or any of the drivetrain for that matter, other than the usual 1st/2nd gear whine that all Evo's have. And now that I started to hear and whine after no abuse I'm thinking it might be time for a fluid change or it's low on fluid. I have yet to check if it's low, which is what I'm hoping for. I'm trying to be optomistic, which is unusual for me
I have access to a lift at work so I can check if the fluid is low and change the fluids. Even if they're not low, I still want to change them and maybe see how the drain plug looks.
I know it's unlikely because of how many people have attempted to change their fluids with no results, but I have read a few times about people having some sucess just by changing their fluids.
I'm certain there IS a problem, I just want to be sure of what it is before I spends $384758349 on a part I didn't need. I might do the old screwdriver / drive on the lift trick and try to listen to see if it may be coming from the transmission output shaft or maybe it's clutch noise since it's loudest when I re-enage the clutch.
I'm a crazy, paranoid son or a ***** that types too much...

Sounds like something in the drivetrain is going to take a dump on you. Especially since the noise changes with speed. My first guess would be the transfercase. Like taimur said, get her up on the jacks and inspect all the fluids, replace if ncessary. Hopefully that fixes the problem, if not, then save your money....

I think it's probably the T-case going bad, but I'm going to stay in denial until I change my fluids
Just ordered some DiaQueen. I'll inspect the fluids and see how they look.
Like I said, I'm hoping that the fluid may just be low. Since the car never made any serious noises beofre, and I'm failry easy on the car, I don't see how it could have gotten worse. Again... denial
The Shep rebuild is just under $1500, so that's not too bad.

I had to run out for a bit so I took the Evo. How is it, that today, the sound is barely noticable? It started to get increasingly louder the longer I drove the car, but still not as loud as it was yesterday. Even yestersday when I first starting driveing the car, the noise was almost non-existent, but as I drove more and more it got louder. Then today, the same thing.
This is just a thoery, probably an incorrect theory due to my denial, but the fact that the fluid is thicker when it's cooler may keep is quite and as the car gets warm, the sound gets louder. Thats the reason I'm going to be changing my fluids, just to see if it at all helps.
And I'm beginning to think it's my be in the trasnmission, not the transfer case. We'll see.
Also, as for my first question... AMSoil 75w-90 GL-4 in an '05 trans (with LSD) ok?
