Help choosing cams! HKS 272 to ???

Current setup:

04 evo
HKS 272 cams
Red turbo
3'' TBE, test pipe, FP o2 housing
680 inj
BR deluxe IC and piping

Question for those that have moved up from the HKS 272 cams, what cams are going to make more power?

I was thinking the FP4r cams or Cosworth M3? Suggestions would be great from those that have made the switch. Thanks

I went from HKS 280's to kelford 272's + GSC's 5039 spring upgrade (stock retainers) and am SUPER happy! You'll lose a few hundred rpm of spool-up but midrange is similar and gain lots of top-end.

A very good recommendation. Also the Cosworth M2's, which have the same lift and profile, will give the same result. I switched from HKS 272's to the M2's and have never looked back. You will need to upgrade your springs and retainers as RockmanX stated. Also I recommend you read the AMS cam shootout for the best cam for your application and driving style/rev range. Kelford 272's + Spring and retainers, especially if you have an Evo 8. The issue with the cam snapped in half was a batch issue, I haven't seen any failures since then. Cwill switched from BF 272's to Kelford 272's when he was on the stocker and still has them on to this day on a 6262.

That's an issue with mivec cams for the IX, not VIII cams.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I wonder what I stand to gain, maybe 10-15 HP with the M2 or Kelfords? I guess I can upgrade the springs and retainers while Im at it. M3 cams need the spring upgrade as well?

I have the Kelfords 272... I love them, 2000 miles on em and no issues... Power at topend is ridiculous and you have to love that lopy idle once tuned properly!!

Damn it, just checked that test thread AMS did and the HKS 272 dyno graph isnt showing up. Anybody recall the results?

EDIT: the graph finally appeared. HKS 272 456 HP over the stock cams 418 HP. So there is my answer, Im looking at another 44+ HP by switching to the Kelfords!!! WOW

457whp for the HKS 272's

498whp for the Kelford 272's

EDIT: Gains will vary since you have an FPRed vs 35R and ? boost you have vs. 22psi.
