Something let go tonight! Need help!

So, I've got my girls in the back and I'm driving across the parking lot from the Pizza hut to the Blockbuster to get a movie while waiting for the pizza. I'm in first gear going pretty slow when all of a sudden, first gear let go. This was moving at about 15 mph. I coasted into a parking spot and put the car in nuetral. Then, I put the car in reverse and she moved back. Put her back into first and nothing. Tried second, third and forth; nothing. I do hear some clacking noise when letting off the clutch in gear. So, first thing that pops into my head is the transfer case. What do you guys think? Why would the car reverse but not work in any other gear?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mike

I'm thinking transfer case as well. All gears going at out at one time does not sound like it should be anything in the transmission. Reverse works so you know clutch is good.

Maybe linkage for the forward gears? Sounds pretty strange

either transfer case of maybe shift linkage popped out. Check under the hood to see if your shift linkage is intact.

Sounds like your shifter linkage fell off the bottom of your shift knob. If so, cheap and easy fix.

the linkage wouldnt explain first gear going since he was already in first gear. ..i could see this happening during shift but even if the cable popped out it would still be in first?? it could be ur center diff

Probably is not your shifter linkage considering you hear a grinding or some sort of noise when your in the gear and let the clutch out. This means your engine to transmission is engaging. Good luck .

Even if you linkage was totally disconnected you could engage and disengage the clutch, connecting/unconnected the engine to the tranny. The shift linkage and clutch hydraulics system are two different things.

OP, I thinking it shift linkage, but I couple be wrong. Good things though is checking the shift linkage is really easy.

Just look in the engine bay, behind the battery, find linkage, make sure its properly and securely connected. If it is, then check the linkage connection at the shifter. Take out the center console and make sure everything is properly and securely connected.

Estimated time is only 5-30 mins depending on your skills.

Thanks for everyone's imput thusfar. I've got a buddy who's going to run me over to the car this morning. We will check the linkage and anything else that could be wrong. If we don't see anything out of sorts, chances are it could be the transfer case. After we have the car towed (flatbed) over to his dads house.

If we can't find anything, how could we know for sure it's the transfer case before pulling it off to be shipped and fixed? I assume John Shepard fixes transfer cases?

Thanks again guys!
Mike

Doesn't sound like the t-case at all..... If it were the t-case you'd hear noise in forward and reverse gears. Sounds like a shift fork issue of some sort inside the transmission. Hope you get it worked out man!!!

I had something similar happen on my IX MR 6sp. I was really concerned when it happened, after some spirited driving. I had broken the shifter cables loose. Fortunately it was less than a $.50 repair with some new hairpin clips.

I agree, doesn't sound like the transfer case, more like a clutch/shifting issue.

with my transfer case when it went, the car would not move in any direction, and couldn't even be pushed.

it sound like the linkage bushings just took a **** on you! remove your battery and battery tray and check the bushings.
