Those of you with an Oil Temp guage..

Redline recommends the use of 15w50 oil if the oil temperature sustains ~225 degrees. Im just curious to see what our oil temps are at, or can get it during spirited driving. I would bet that our temps are somewhere around there, and some 15w50 oil would be good.

Goes back to Cladius always talking about how the Euro rally folks always put their money on Castrol Syntec 10w60. (also the only oil that touches the M3's and M5's)

Under track driving and really hard canyon/mountain driving the oil temps hover around 260-280 degrees.

Thank you very much for that. It would seem that our cars WOULD benefit from running a Xw50 or Xw60 oil...

Im debating on wether to make that trip to the local Bimmer dealership to pick up some Castrol RS 10w60.....

I wouldn't do it, you are required to run 10W30 or 5W30 per the warranty restrictions. 'Course if you don't mind taking the risk I'm sure you'd be fine running 10W60, but I wouldn't go with a heavier cold rating than that.

180-200deg F. on the streets, stop and go, not carrying sustained boost or high revs.

240deg F. is the highest i've seen under canyon and track conditions.

Ambient temps around 90deg F. and my oil temp sensor is in the oil pan as a drain plug FWIW. Those posting temps should note where their sensors are cause it can make a difference in comparing with others.

I doubt Mitsu would ever know the difference. Plus the manual recommends a heavier weight depending on 'driving conditions'. The dealer is just too dumb to know any better and always uses 10W-30.

Castrol has been making some good syns lately.
I'd also recommend Mobil 1 15W-50.

I'm just sayine man.

I also doubt they would have specified 10W30 overall if they (mitsu engineering) didn't think it was the best choice. Obviously they are not concerned about ownership maintenance cost or anything.

I don't think a cold-weight heavier oil will do any good either. 5W60 -- I would say that's a better idea if you're hellbent on switching grades.
