Smell with race pipe

I just installed my turboback exhaust with a race pipe and it stinks. Now I don't know if that is because the exhaust is brand new or what. Anyone here use a race pipe also, but the exhaust doesn't just smell horribly?

If you are not using a catalytic converter, you will find that your exhaust stinks. If it bothers you terribly, look at a high flow cat. I assume that your race pipe omitted the cat.

Correct, no cat. I know alot of people out there are running their cars without cats. If everyone's smells like mine I don't know how they do it

Yeah, mine stinks too. it gives me a headache. this is because the Evo runs extra rich. Every car with the cat removed will smell the same too.

I am going to just go with a high flow cat. 5 hp is not worth that smell. Drive with the windows down and when you get out you will smell like gas.

I will play devils advocate here. I have the B&B downpipe and catback. There is a perin cat delete pipe or race pipe, whatever you want to call it, inbetween the two B&B pieces. I had the B&B exhaust pipe on there a least a month before the perin pipe. I have no noticible smell coming from the exhaust. Only when I put 100 octane 76 race gas does it give that sweet smell of power. Supreme 93 from 76 gives me no more smell than that of the system without the pipe.

so is it safe to say that if I get a fuel controller I can lean out the fuel and most of the smell will go away?

It has little to do with running rich or unrich. You're smelling noxious combustion byproducts. Byproducts that are catalyzed by catalytic converters into H2O, CO2 and other benign stuff. Leaning things out with a fuel computer won't make the car less offensive.

Thanks Shiv. Now that is an answer I can believe. I guess I am going back to cat then. 5HP isn't worth it at all.

It's for running so rich and because you have a new exhaust. When I got my HKS Hi-Power I had a horrible smell for a few days then it was gone, but I also still have my stock cat.

I know why, because yours has that 2 inch gap and all the exhaust leaks out before it gets out of the pipe lol. I am just kidding and being a smart ***. It should smell, they all do without a cat

As you've seen, running catless emmits a pretty distinctive stench which most cops will recognize. In CA, being pulled over and inspected will result in a *big* fine on the spot.

As for hp, we've seen as gains as high as 10-12 wheel hp with the cat removed (compared to a free flow cat). Pretty substantial gain. But not worth it, IMHO.
