snapped exhaust manifold bolt that attaches to head, need help

Hi. Well I was taking exhaust manifold off the other day, and 1 of the bolts that holds exhaust manifold attached to the head, snapped on me. I used liquid wrench since all of them were rusted badly, but previous owner might have over torqued it, because as soon as I started to unscrew it, it snapped on me very easily. Now Im stuck with 1/2" broken bolt attached to head.

Any idea how I can take it off ? I tried to heat it up with one of these small butane torches, and use pliers to make it loose but didn't work.

Did it snap flush with the head?

If you didn't screw the threads up already trying to use pliers, you could try and double nut the stud and back it out with a wrench. Spray some PB blaster on there and let it sit for a while before you try that though and then heat it up with a propane torch and it should come out.

Hope you don't have to resort to drilling it out or anything like that.

You may be able to EZ Out it. You can pick them up at a local hardware store. If you do have to drill it, just retap it. You can either purchase a tap, or make your own. Keep us updated, and GL.

EZ out should be one of the last steps to try, they break all of the time. You get that broken off in there, good luck trying to drill through it.

try this first.

do the double nut trick. if that doesn't work, then resort to using a set of vice grips. The vice grips will mess up the thread so that's why you want to do that after you try the double nut. Also relaly soak it with blaster like bob said

thx guys. will keep you posted. I can only work on the car on the weekends. Will try your ideas this saturday. Maybe I should try to take all of them out, and replace with new bolts, but then again I don't want to screw up the good ones.

I cleaned rust on all of them with a metal brush and a drill, but wouldn't mind replacing them for the future.

You would turn it out counter-clockwise (left) to turn a bolt out

Quoted for truth. If you do have to EZ out it, be very careful. I've had the misfortune of breaking one... That was enough of a lesson to teach me to be careful

+1 on the welding. done this before and it works great, weld won't stick to the aluminum.
