05 Evo 8 Ticking Lifters?

I have read about the lifters commonly being the cause for any ticking sound on the Evos but I was suspecting I would hear that more from the top of the engine.

I have an 05 Evo 8 (stock with 27k miles) that from the start I have always heard an odd ticking occuring from the back side of the engine compartment. It is strongest from the area behind the oil cap and near the intakes on the block. Attached is a video that may better illustrate the location and sound. When reving the engine, it for the first second makes a zipping sound or as best as I can describe an electical zzzz sound but then less than a second later all you hear is the ticking that revs along with the engine speed. At idle it just ticks and it only makes the zzzz sound at the start of reving. I am not used to hearing these types of sounds from other engines.

Is this just the sound of ticking lifters and nothing to worry about?

It could be several things. Most likely either your injectors or even the lifters themselves. Sounds like injectors to me though.

If it is lifters, it is probably not something to worry about as they are just noisy, right? If it is injectors, is it something to worry about though?

I think I am still under warranty for the engine and drivetrain but the 5 year is up on the other stuff though. The dealer has done all of my warranty covered work each year and of course never said anything about it. I never questioned them though as I suspected it was normal since it was always there.

Have you compared to another local Evo to see how much louder your car is? I would recommend that before the delaer touches the car. The 4g63 is generally a louder engine as was mentioned earlier, the injectors an lifters a little noisy. However, when the lifters go bad you can really tell the noise difference.

Yeah, you really should compare the noise to another local evo or several. If yours is much louder, i would have it looked at. It very well could be a bad lifter, as they tend to get really noisy when they die. But, just so you know, the 4g63's lifters are kinda noisy to begin with, in comparison to other engines.

Do you have aftermarket cams? Valve springs? Aftermarket injectors? If you do, make sure you're comparing another evo with the same mods. Aftermarket cams/springs and larger injectors will all make different and sometimes louder noises.

I would love to compare it to another Evo in the area but there are none that I know of. I am about an hour West of St. Louis so the closest I get to another Evo is randomly passing by one.

Car internals are all stock.

Injectors tick, it's they're pulsing cycle. I'm not sure if that's what you guys are referring to but I can always hear my injectors. It's not crazy audible but definitely there.
