Its been a good 300 miles and I'm prety sure that no matter of mileage is going to alleviate the shudder.

I really dont understand whats going on though. Now I'm just being paranoid about my install. Maybe I left a drop of oil between the surface? Flipper plate? etc. Exedy only makes quality clutches. Theyre the oe manufacturer for 95 percent of japans car manufacturers!

The stage 1 is garbage. It is worse than stock. Trying to launch it like that, you will have run through the whole disc within 6-12 months. It is NOT a performance clutch.

3 puck 385tq rated. Not seen many of them.

I can give you a comparison. Our ACT HDTTP singledisc clutch is rated to 650tq and it suitable for stock to 600+whp Evo's. Very stocklike pedal effort and very driveable.

I have had an Exedy Stage 1 HD installed for the past 3,500 miles and I have not had any problems at all. While the clutch was being broken in it grabbed really hard and chattered a bit, but after the break-in period (I extended it to about 700 miles), the chatter went away completly.

The pedal feels a bit heavier than stock and there is just the slightest hint of noise during decel, which is something that happens with some clutches (I also have a polyurethane engine front roll stopper, which certainly applifies any vibrations and noises that are present in the system).

Shep's guys did the installation on my car and did a superb job!

I have the hd as well and the shudder has gone away with more and more mileage. I'm still tempted in tearing it down.

I was thinking of starting a thread on this clutch.

My experience:

I installed the Exedy Single HD w/ my ACT Prolite flywheel. It shuddered so badly that I got on the phone with Sheptrans.com and blew up over the phone (I've never done this before.. And I'm a long time Sheptrans.com customer, and still am BTW ) Shep did immediately defend the clutch, saying many people order it and report no problems. I thought it had to be an install error, but I've done 5 Evo clutches and I know I didn't miss anything. I broke it in, over 1300 miles, and it was still horridly choppy.

I then got on the phone with Exedy customer service. He told me that the shutter was "normal" and that its more of a drag/street clutch. He then proceeded to tell me that if I want a good clutch, I should have gotten the Twin. Rudely, he asked "would you buy KDW's or Hoosiers to race on? Then why did you buy the Single HD instead of the Twin HD?" Getting nowhere, I continued to flood Exedy with emails and phone calls. Eventually, the VP of Exedy emailed me, and said to work with the guy who sold it to me for credit towards a different clutch. Unhappy with the treatment I got from 'Sean' at Exedy, I wasn't happy about having to buy another Exedy product, but I was stuck. Finally, I got on the phone again with Shep and said that I need to pull this clutch and send it back to him. He called Exedy, and being the awesome guy he is, he got them to agree to give credit toward the Exedy Twin HD which I installed in its place (more on that later).

Basically, in summary, the Exedy single horridly shuttered, and at any autox/track event the thing always smelled like I was burning it (I've driven my stock clutch 50k miles with track time/autocross and my ACT lasted 26k before it failed, lots of track time and autocross launches), so I know how to drive an AWD clutch. This Exedy Single was the absolute worst feeling clutch ever.. period. I equate it to a 1956 Cub Cadet tractor I drove as a teenager (I'm 27, my Dad just bought an old tractor for yard work lol). After pulling the clutch, there was no evident install error, and the disc/flywheel surface looked incredibly bad, as if I overheated it many times.

I exchanged it for my Exedy Twin HD and it is the best clutch ever which I also installed. I think someone should send this thread to Exedy. I asked them for a response after they 'tested' the clutch, but have gotten no response. This was August, 2009.

Interesting story... How many miles did you put on the Exedy Stg 1 HD before you decided it was time to yank it?

Ya so basically it seems that this was a bad idea to get this clutch.....which sucks because i have never had a problem with exedy before. Idk what i will be doing but as for now i will be trying to make due with what i have. I got about 60k on my stock clutch and it felt great had i know that my "upgrade" would have been a downgrade id have gotten the stock one again. It really does make me sad though that im having these problems because like i said i have never had an issue with exedy.

Needless to say i will continue to try and get the clutch to calm down since some of the guys said it goes away but for the future i dont think ill be going with exedy again.
