It doesnt take 5 if you fill it up to the top. At the top level "FULL" mark it takes 4.49 quarts and not a drop more. I have let my car drain for a full two hours on level ground, and it still took no more than 4.5 quarts. However if you were to manually disconnect the oil cooler line, you may be closer to a full 5 quarts.

Do not overfill your crankcase by putting 5 quarts in. START at 4, let the engine warm up, go through normal checking procedures and add a little oil at a time until its at the FULL mark, and no higher.

I thought rod bolts were ALWAYS a "use once" part. They are stretched when torqued. The only ones I know of that I think you can get away with using more than once are the Raceware bolts.

6K Miles for me...4 Oil changes...Full 600 Mile break-in! I Beat the **** out of my car, you will find others who do full maintenance and have NO problems. My clutch was allittle worn, so I replaced it early before I had problems.

Have you tried going through the dispute resolution process? It doesn't cost you anything (but more time) and if you don't like the outcome you can still pursue any and all legal remedies in your state. Many times once a third party gets involved an agreement can be reached that all parties involved can live with. The process is outlined in an insert you should have received with the owners manual. We can argue all day about how often to check the oil. In most cases it comes down to what is "reasonable and prudent". Is it reasonable and prudent for owners of the Evo VIII to believe their cars to can go 2600 miles, or even between oil changes (3750 miles), without completely running out of oil? I think a reasonable person would say yes.

Good Luck

I'm sorry but changing the oil is a maintenance item that you are reponsible for, jus like checking the oil in the car. The general rule of thumb is to check it every 1000 miles. Aside from the potential damage to the motor, imagine what an underlubricate turbine spinning at about 100,000 RPMs does. At the very least you are protecting the turbo by checking the oil.

That said, with the miles you have MMC should at least do something for you like a resonable split. We would normally charge the customer for labor and have warranty pay for the parts. OF course that was not a Mitsu dealer, it's pretty clear the have about the worst warranty program out there.

This is just my 2 cents. I think you guys that has blown up motors most likely broke the motor in like that "guy" Motorman" by driving it hard in the beginning. Now you are paying for it.

As far as engine dynamics are concerned, the motoman method is far better for longevity than the factory recommended break-in.
Using the motoman method does not give you a free pass to run the **** out of it right off of the lot. You should strictly adhere to the rules set with in the procedure.
The best thing you could ever do for any engine, besides making sure that the oil level is correct, is to allow it enough time to warm up to normal operating temperature!!!

Checking oil should be dependent on how you drive the car. If you run it hard (i.e. any form of racing) you should check it before and after words.
Driving the car "normal" should more than likely result in minimal oil consumption. If you notice that you are burning more than 1 quart for every one thousand miles than talk to your service department. They will put your car on a monitoring system where you bring the car in every one thousand miles and the dealer checks the oil for you. If it is proven that the engine uses more than 1 quart in 1 thousand miles you are inline for an engine replacement according to the warrantee. Call your dealer and ask about it if you think you may be having problems.

I went threw this with a brand new jetta 2 years ago. It would usually burn exactly 1quart in a thousand miles. VW of America refused to replace the engine since it did not burn any more than 1 quart in the thousand miles. I sold the car, and lost my down payment.
BTW I had not heard about the motoman method before purchasing the car. It was broken in using the factory recommended break-in procedure. My next car a 02wrx was broken in using the motoman method and it used ZERO oil in 3000 miles.

regards,
aaron

Hmm, I am looking at buying an Evo this weekend but this is scaring me, not necessarily the running out or burning oil but Mitsu's warranty

We have an 03 S2000 and it actually burns oil as well, not alot but I guess its normal for the first few thousand miles (from what we have been told on the S2K board) We already had our S2K ordered before I had heard of it, but the car is slowly burning less oil now that it has more miles (7400)

I agree that it sux that you have to check your oil that often on a new car, but I know half or more of the people that buy these cars beat them pretty good, that alone would give me reason to check the oil more often, anyways thats just my .02 cents...good luck BTW
