I have a 2003 Evo 8. I was in 5th gear going 70mph. I started hearing a chattering or knocking noise. I pull over and try to put the car in neutral as I am coasting to a stop to check it out. It was really hard to get it out of gear, I finally got it in neutral and it stalled and made a clunking noise when I let out the clutch (In neutral??!). It could barely shift thru the gears when the car was off. It felt stuck. I could start it when I had the clutch in, but as soon as i let it out it would stall. The car had NO issues before this. Tranny was smooth. No noises. This was really random. Is my tranny done?? Any ideas what happened? Please let me know.

Remove the skid plate and check if you have leaked tranny fluid.. Sounds like the tranny ran dry and seized up..

 

Yes, it sounds like the tranny is gone. It's really hard to say what exactly broke since almost any broken part in the tranny would give you similar results. My guess would be a broken sync or gear and pieces of it are stuck in other gears that caused the lock up.

 

Out of curiousity how many miles are on your evo 8?

Been tracked?

90,000 miles. Never been tracked. It ran sooooo smooth. Shifted like butter. It was so unexpected and very random. I mean i had not done anything, just cruisin at 70mph on the interstate in 5th. :[ Sooo sad. Time for a shep tranny i guess.

 

Same thing happened to me too, just cruising down a freeway and started hearing noises in the tranny, got off the freeway and couldn't shift out of 3rd gear. Made it to the shop I worked at and the wheels locked up right in the parking lot. Everyone came out of the shop to see what the hell was going on since the tires just screamed when it locked up. I guess I was lucky it didn't lock up on the freeway....

 

What ended up being the problem? Tranny? How much to fix it lol? I want to get a shep tranny, but i have no one to take it out of the car! Maybe they will let me get it towed to them. Thanks for the help everyone!
