Trans Install. Want to light myself on fire.

I am doing the clutch on a customers Evo. I can usually tackle this job with two good long shifts. Have done this many times and it has always just slid into position. I am using a engine lift for ease of installation (or not).

For some reason I cannot get the trans to slide in and rest against the block. There is a 1/2 gap between the trans and block. It just won't go on. I put in a good 8 hours today just trying to get the damn thing on. Nothing is in the way of it sliding on. Is it possible the clutch disc became no longer centered between the pressure plate and flywheel? Seems kind of doubtful though since there is a ton of pressure holding it down and the dowel pins line up perfectly.

Any tips? When I turn the motor w/ the trans in gear with how it sits on the motor now, the trans does turn over w/ the motor so I know the input shaft is somewhere in the disc. The retaining clip on the pressure plate is also still in tact.

can you drop the trans back out completely, recheck everything, and tackle it again?

I got to a point where it would not move. I Lifted the motor up and made it level and made sure the trans was level with the motor and it slipped on the rest of the way. Make sure it not cocked and is going on some one straight.

I would pull it off, and double check the clutch alignment

We just did one in a buddies garage and had to use the bolts that go in from the engine side on the bottom to carefully draw it in the last 1/2 inch. I don't like doing that but as long as you tighten them evenly USING ONLY HAND TOOLS and making sure the pressure is even and not binding it will work. Let me know if there is anything we can do to help.

check your dowels, one could be off. pull the pressure plate off and make sure everything is right. I wouldn't use the bolts to draw the trans in, that can force something to break that you won't know about until after everything is done.

If the tranny does not snap on there is something off

^ +1 if it's not sliding on I wouldn't force it, when I did mine I remember it was a strugle but we did get it to slide on all the way. I would take it off check everything and try again could be a problem with the pressure plate??

Thanks guys, I'm going to take it off and check everything again for sure. Sucks that getting it back into position up onto the motor is also a pain... damn subframe.

Jesus. Yeah this job is a pain in the ***!!!!! What o ring are you talking about? I came up with a few tricks though overnight that may help. Sand the dowel pins a bit, lube them, and lube the input shaft a bit as well, maybe that will help the trans slide on better. I think I might remove the rear mount from the sub frame if possible. I also tow strapped the motor to pull it away from the subframe for more clearance.

I will try all that. and yes this **** is rediculous, Ive done this 3 times before but i do not know what is going on with it this time. I thought about takin the rear mount off but theres no way in hell you can bolt it back on when everythings in the car. I am going to get at it tomorrow again and see what happens.

you know, i think a huge part of my problem is that im using a floor jack to lift the tranny up in there. i was told to use a motorcycle jack and it will be a hole lot easier, or just get a low tranny jack but were the hell do i get one of those.

I am using an engine lift with chains bolted to the bell housing for me. I am doing this by myself so its hard to use just a floor jack
