Hi kdogg,
Good question and really the whole point here. The answer to your question is absolutely not.
Because turbo timed cars run much longer at idle than necessary, turbo timers contribute to polution and global warming. Probably a precursor to the melting of the polar ice caps and the end of life as we know it. So...... keep on using your gizmo timer thingy and save up for a wet suite.
Speedlimit...
i dont know how many of you park your cars and trust the e-brake. i personally have had two experiences with the e-brake one good one bad.
good- my prev. car was a gti vr6. one day i parked in a handicap to run in staples and by paper for printer. took less than 5min. came out and the rear of my car was in the air. a tow truck was trying to tow my car. but no luck, car was in gear(locking front wheels)and e-brake was up locking rear wheels, he could not tow it, saved me a trip to the impound.
bad- forgot to put car in first one time, in my driveway and did not have it in gear and found car 10 min later in the middle of the street.
personally i sit for a minute or two and listen to the radio, shut car off and put it in gear. btw i do have a timer just never installed it. it for sale w/harness if anybody wants it pm me.

if you do get a turbo timer.. definitely get one with the auto function. Altho turbo timers are not always necessary...it is a good guage of how much cooldown time is needed. Mine is always set to auto, and usually when i exit the freeway, the timer is at around 2 minutes. Then i drive on the streets for a mile or two.. and then by the time i find a parking space there is only about 10-30 seconds left on the timer. If there is less than 15 seconds I just wait until it counts down before i turn off the car.
I like it because it's a good guage of how much your car needs cooling down. (before i got my tt i would wait in the car for a minute or so...now i know that it was extra time wasted!)
Plus.. for 90 bucks or so its not a bad mod! (mine has volt readings, rpm readings, speed, peak speed, 0-60 all that crap.. so its a fun little gadget as well. =P)

Is a turbo timer necessary ??? The short answer is - of course not.
But I installed one anyway. It's a personal choice like most everything else for this car. Consider:
Is a new bigger better shinier front strut bar necessary ???
For the 1 out of 1000 that actually tracks his car, probably.
But the rest of us that got one knows why we did it...
The same argument can be made for many things for our beloved Evo.
Dude, if you want one get one. You don't need anyones permission or approval.
It'll be functional if you want it to be, and if you choose not to use it all the time, it still looks good.
Waste of money??? It'll only cost twice what a UK rear badge will, and less than half of a pair of Evo7 tails, or whatever.
Yet some people HAD to have these items.
Everyone has their reasons for doing what they do, but they are your reasons, and that is what makes them important to you.

Yes, except the orginal question was not "mother may I". He ask if a turbo timer was necessary and what where other owners doing relative to cooldown times.
Heck, people can put a purple propeller on top if they want to.
Speedlimit ...
The purple propeller is a better idea IMHO..... I got talked into buying a Turbo timer for my WRX and I found it to be unnecessary and a real pain in the *ss. As somebody said before, it's really easy to forget to set the ebrake properly (or in a steep hill it might not hold alone). It's no fun to see your car roll into other cars or walls, or the middle of the street. Also, you really hurt fuel economy and add to the air pollution.
Of course... If you gotta have one, I'm sure nothing that anybody says is gonna make any difference. Still, that purple propeller....

TT's are only needed if you are too rushed to sit in the car for an extra minute after a hard run, or if you are forgetful.
btw, warming up a car by letting it sit in your driveway idling is a horrible thing to do to your car on a cold day. Cold idle is when most of the wear on your engine occurs. You want to get past that part of the warm-up as quickly as possible. You should only have to start up the car and drive it away, keeping the rpm's down. This warms up the car much more quickly.
