Turbo power vs. reliability debate
OK, I'm going to apologize in advance for beating an already-dead horse, but it might be nice to have all of this 'pte is garbage' and 'garrett makes more power' information in one place. plus im at a fork in my build
Background:
I'm wanting at least 550awhp+ on pump 93 octane with a built 2.0l motor (and probably 600+ in the future). This is my only car, daily driver, and a car that does long trips between school and home, so reliability is somewhat important. The car will be driven 90% on the streets (i.e. not too much track time) so "street fun factor" does come into account. *sponsors feel free to chime in; your experienced opinions are always highly valued*
Choices and explanations: (take a deep breath..)
1) pte6262 dbb: turbo will make good power with the ability to grow. somewhat laggy. oil cooled only. single scroll. apparent reliability issues with chra's and shafts with possible warranty refusal lately.
2)pte6235 dbb: turbo will spool sooner than a 6262, yet make comparable power. uses a garrett exhaust wheel (or entire garrett chra?). possible twin scroll. slightly more expensive. unsure of reliability.
3) FP hta3586 dbb: most expensive of the choices. oil and water cooled. have heard zero issues with reliability.
4) garrett gt35r dbb: good spool. will be peaked to meet goals. no reliability/warranty issues.
Any other comparable choices are welcomed. I want to do this build once and not be constantly replacing turbo's, so I'm seeking reliable information. nobody likes a blown turbo
.
I am leaning toward a hta3586 but am not keen on water lines on turbo's.. dont know why, just never saw the need when plenty are doing fine air and oil cooled. I'm not sure if a regular 35r will get me where I want to be, and although I know a 6262/6235 will get me there, I don't want to be replacing it 3 months from now. Please vote on your choice and explain why (i.e. I blew 10 of "x" turbo's, etc.)
p.s. points made above are my own observations and are there for emphasis or correction. If I mis-stated a feature above, post up and I will correct it. I'm trying to keep this organized so others can use it for a reference too.
