Different Reverse Gear Issue
Different Reverse Gear Issue
I have read a few posts about reverse engagment and lockout...
my issue is slightly different. It started about 3 weeks ago after putting the car in reverse and then all of a sudden it just popped out. The problem has gotten consistently worse and today and literally had to hold it in reverse (forcefully) to keep it there. Even while doing that it either kinda slightly grinded or made a popping sound.
I have no other issues with engagement in any other gear.
History on car...i am the orignal owner...car has 106K...ACT street installed about 25K AGO and I change the driveline fluids every 7-10K miles.
I know there is no reverse syncro so what else could it be?
Thanks

Of course there´s a reverse syncro. And in your Evo 8 it might be a dual synchro assembly.
You should check it out. Could be a bent fork, or you might just need a new sleeve and synchro spring.

I know the AWD DSM 5 spd trans uses a typical non-synchronized reverse so I would assume the Evo 5 spd used thru the Evo IX is also non synchronized since the transmissions are very similar.
In the Evo, the reverse and 5th gears share the same sleeve. Both have a single synchro ring. So, I guess the reverse is synchronized.
That doesn´t mean one can engage reverse with the car moving. When the car is moving forward the reverse gear on the input shaft is rotating on the oposite way of the 5th gear. You will never manage to stop and reverse the rotation of the whole input shaft and clutch disc by the braking force of the reverse synchro. I can hear it grinding!
