Well freeze plug blew out of the block again...
I keep spare ones in the glove box now scott. When you get it running log a pull or two and make sure there aren't fueling or over boost issues. Sometimes they just pop and sometimes there's another issue. I'm assuming yours isn't the later but I'd check to be safe.
this just happened to me today, 05 running stock turbo with 20g wheel boost set to 25psi. happened at about 7k under full load. the 40mm plug next to the power steering pump blew out. strangely enough i was able to drive the car another 5 miles and the temp gauge never moved... tried replacing it today and its a real pain in the *** even when you remove the manifold. cant get a clean hit on it because of the power steering pump. got it in there the best i could and drove 10 miles home. its leaking so i am going to replace it with a rubber one tomorrow and call it a day. you guys think my head gasket is toast? i couldnt imagine a stock turbo at 25psi lifting the head
This happened to me 3 times on my built motor already, once when i just installed the motor street driving and it popped out the head was good and had no issues with hg, this was on the cometic HG. second time when i was on the dyno another freeze plug came out and and blew the head gasket this was at 39 psi on the oem 8 HG. 3rd time was at 39 psi again 4th gear at about 65k RPM and the head gasket is bad I'm tearing it down now. its my fault cause the machine shop replaced the OEM plugs and that was a ****ty idea.
WE have seen these issues while hitting hard the limiter, heating the tires at the track, never had issues with heads lifting, common sense tells that the over pressure may crack open the radiator cap first and you will see coolant in the overflow blotte..
We think this is due to vibrations, specially on built motors without balance shafts, banging gears and hitting a hard cut, the 4g63 makes tons of torsional loads without the shafts...
we have popped two of them in 5 years with the car, both hitting the limiter hard.. we opted for the latest aem software to soften up the fuel and ignition cut cycles
also we rather use bronze on the big ones, bronze seems to dial better not only with corrosion it is dealing better the vibrations
We have never seen any HG problem with oem size stud (arps 625s to 100 lbs) and oem head gasket..
The oem freeze plugs are stell and they are not installed with any sealant or glue from factory
