Apparently throttle body vacuum leak. Help Please!
Apparently throttle body vacuum leak. Help Please!
Okay so I just finally picked up an evo again. 2005 TB GSR. I'm having a problem though. There is a whistling noise coming from the the throttle body. According to the dealership it's a vacuum leak in the throttle body itself. So they say that they ordered me a new throttle body. That was 3 weeks ago and still no throttle body. So it continues to drive me insane and it is effecting the throttle response and possibly a few other things. Someone please help. I can't find anything on here and the dealer keeps telling me that its on back order but can't give me any idea when im going to get it. Is there anything I can try in the meantime? Any suggestions would be greatly apprecited.
TIA

The dealer probably didn't tell you that the throttle shaft seals can be replaced. (Ask how I know!) They want to sell you the complete throttle body. Get the Mil-Spec seals, and search here for the How-To post.
How do you know? haha. I would say I'd agree with you if they weren't replacing it on their dime since I just bought the car. It still falls within the 30 day warranty but I think they are lagging so I will end up having to pay for it. I'm going to call some other dealerships tomorrow to see if they can get the throttle body so I can find out if the are jerking my chain.
From what ive heard yes they can have the whistling noise. But according to the dealer its a vacuum leak in the throttle body itself. I havent done that test and I'm not sure how to. Could you elaborate?

The shaft that goes thru the center of the throttle body which rotates to open the throttle door, there are rubber seals on the ends of it to prevent air from escaping. These seals are notorious for wearing out, drying, and cracking and no longer sealing.
MilSpec sells improved shaft seals. Do a search on milspec shaft seals and youll find all you need.
Unless this has nothing to do with a leak at your shaft seals and it is a leak out of the IAC or something. To find out, do a boost leak test, get a spray bottle with some soapy water, and spray it on the throttle body. When you fill the system up with air, the soapy water will bubble where your air leak is.

well, if you buy a throttle body, you could go with the stocker, which is very good, or you could get an upgraded throttlebody. mitsu sells the throttle body complete with new sensors, and is like $800 bucks. ( at least that was my experience.) an upgraded is usually $4-500 dollars, in which you reuse the old sensors. just an option. of course, the seals would be the cheapest and easiest way to go, if you have some mechanical ability. milspec or works. speed element also has them. theres probably more out there. good luck!
Unless the TB is cracked you aren't going to have a leak. Get some new seals and replace those and you'll be good. You can make a leak tester for about 6 bucks and quarantee yourself it's the seals.
Okay so tried spraying soap and water on the tb. I didnt see the bubbles anywhere. The dealer said it was a throttle body leak but could they be wrong? Let me give you guys a little more background on the situation and see what you think. Okay so when I'm depressing the throttle in a certain way i hear the whistling noise and when i let off is when i can hear it the most then it goes away. Also when i get on it sometimes the rpms will stay high even with my foot off of the gas and then slowly come down when im coming to a stop. Im assuming this has something to do with the leak but not sure. Any ideas?
Well is this being done under warranty? If so, call Mitsu and get a case open to get the dealership on top of it.
If you are paying for it, then call every day twice a day until they get that ordered. Also, use Mil.Spec Throttle Body Shaft Seals.
Since it seems you are having issues identifying the location of the leak, bring it to a Evo performance shop and a boost leak test will reveal it.
