Fifth gear scratch?
Fifth gear scratch?
So Ive had my EvoVIII for about five months now and every time I shift in to fifth gear hard it scratches. Is this comon in these vehicles? Every time I ease the gear in it doesnt scratch. Anyone have the same problem if so a bit of info would help.
I had the same problem on my stock transmission, until one day it was almost impossible to get into gear. Now I have a Shep tranny, and it just recently started doing it once in a great while. But it's mostly my fault for not having it in the right RPMs.
very common problem. I have built many of these transmissions and the 5th gear issue is somewhat of a mystery. the mystery is two part. part one is sometimes the syncro just wears out prematurely. even fresh rebuilt trans can wear them out in a couple months. this includes the shep design double syncro as well. one local here had to send his trans back to shep twice at his cost. the syncro only lasted 2-3 months each time. on the third time he refused to send whole trans back and asked for just the syncro. I think he ended up selling car to to the unexpected expense of removing trans every 2.5 months.
second problem is likely user error. the trans will come in here with the 5th gear grind. but when opened up I find the syncro not worn at all and in good shape. but the teeth rounded over confirming the dreaded grind. the issue here is the shifter fork. due to the design of fork (extreme angle) one finger tends to put more pressure on syncro during hard shift. in affect pushing it cocked from one side when its important that it pushes evenly from both sides. the fork will have one finger more worn then the other. this can be avoided with less aggressive 5th/rev gear shift. once the fork is worn uneven the fork needs to be replaced with a new one.

It can be hit or miss. I have nearly 100,000 on my 03 and the transmission shifts just as it did with 1 mile on it. Every gear goes in perfectly, but i don't powershift ever. You never know I guess.
