Evo VIII transfer case leak?

my evo is leaking and im almost 100% sure it is the transfer case. It leaks near the front of the car between my front wheels, it seems to be coming down over my exhaust and onto my stabilizer bar between the front tires. I originally thought it was an oil leak, but after getting it up on a lift this morning I'm convinced its the transfer case. the fluid seems to be like a clearish gold color and it feels like motor oil but every place that the oil could leak from is bone dry. Mitsubishi said they would take a look at it for no charge, any ideas on what the problem could be or what i should do?

Did you get the clutch changed recently or separate the transfer case from the transmission?

My transfer case is leaking as well. Originally I thought it was the little o-ring seal but 2 weeks ago I pulled it apart and replaced that o-ring and it still leaks. Upon inspection when I pulled, I noticed the leak was coming fromt he center section where the input shaft goes through. I inspected the larger thin O-ring seal and it seemed worn out. So I'll be taking it off again and this time replacing all the seals.

Oh and as a location to check for the leak. Mine leaks from right between where the Transfer case and transmission mate.

The little o-ring is part number 30289s
big thin o-ring is : 30289p
big solid ring is : 30146

Hey I appreciate the info and the diagrams. My cousin is about to graduate from UTI in Illinois and said he can take a part a transfer case no problem. If we can do the labor ourselves what do you think I'd be looking at for parts cost on this?

If it leaks on the passenger side it's most likely the oil seal for that shaft. It’s kind of hard to see if it’s coming from that seal as almost everything will be sprayed with oil. Drive the car and jack it up and get under it (use jack stands) and use a flash light to make sure it is in fact coming from the seal. Trust me you don’t want to take it out if you don’t have to. Also, you don't have to take the Tcase off in order to replace it. Just pop the tire off, unbolt the drive shaft move the whole brake assembly to the side and you should have enough access. In order to slip the new seal in you need a special tool made by mitsu. It is possible to do it with a home made tool but you have to know what the final product looks like. Also (this was a problem on my car) make sure that there are no scratches on the inside walls where the seal sits, this will cause leaks. Once you remove the old seal, feel the internal surface with your finger and make sure it’s smooth. If there are scratches, sand them down carefully and replace the seal. The seal has to go in straight in order for it to work, hence the special tool. Sounds like your buddy knows what he’s doing so should be no problem.

i took it to a tranny place in Milwaukee, WI. The worst was confirmed, crack in the transfer case. Worst thing is it was covered up with epoxy. I've only owned the car for about 2.5 months and this problem was never disclosed to me. The estimate i got was roughly 1k to take down transfer case, weld the crack and put it back in assuming nothing is wrong from the inside. The person who owned the evo before before will definitely be getting a call from me, and maybe my lawyer too.

I would NOT weld, I would have someone check your internals or have them refreshed or replaced and find a used shell that has broken internals. I just feel that a weld would be like a bandaid and since taking the Tcase on and off isn't exactly easy I would do it right the first time

My tranny guy said the weld would only be a solution barring that all of the internals are okay, otherwise a replacement tcase is in order. Is this a good way to go or no?

I have the same problem..its leaking between the tcase and trans looks like two slow drips. It takes overnight on a slope for it to make two small quarter like drops...I replaced the bigger seal and o-ring but its still leaking....any thoughts?

James,

One Does not Simply Replace the case on a transfer case

It is not as simple as it sounds. There is required steps for the case to go on properly. I would say no, you cannot tackle the job yourself. Removing the tcase is easy. Actual case and internal handling is out of the question, unless you work with rebuilding t-cases and differentials. (maybe your friend from Illinois does that?)

Call Shepard or TRE and they will tell you the same story.

My advice is find yourself a used tcase on here. Depending on your available funds, get yourself either a stock one with low miles or one that was rebuilt already by Shepard or TRE.

Good Luck,
_T.H.

Bump this too. I got the leak between the Tranny and TCase. What seals do I need? It looks like there are 3 of them...? I would replace all of them when in there if what I'm saying is accurate. Can someone confirm?

Yes I just replaced all three of my seals. I'm curious as to where this copper washer goes I can't seem to figure it out.

Yeah I guess it has to do with a copper washer that I didn't put in I'm working on it now. Do you have the copper washers in?
