Shep trans 5th gear grinding!
Redline cocktail. 1 qt of MTL and 2 qts of MT-90.
do not use lightweight shockproof. That stuff is crap. the waxes separate from the fluid and block the oiling passages. will cause lack of lubrication to 5th gear!
I rebuild my gearbox myself the first time. I'll have TRE do it next time... Jon has a few tricks that I'd love to have in my gearbox

I just pulled my tranny to change the clutch and seen this thread, I was also going to send my tranny to sheps to get it rebuild. I have to do some more reviews on it now i guess. Might just have to rebuild one locally.
Currently have 6 Puck, want to change to Exedy twin maybe waiting on the thread replies.
tnx

I was using the mt90 in my shep tranny but it would just grind too bad so I've been using lightweight shockproof for the past two tranny fluid flushes I've done and no issues so far since then
just kind of "bandaging" the grind until I have time and money to have the tranny sent into tre

Jebus i'm planning on buying a shep trans....although it seems this is a problem with the 5spds in general. I thought it had to do with the shift fork not putting proper pressure on that hear...or something to that affect....I know this problem has been mentioned before i'm just trying to remember what was said
Sounds like going with the double synchro would be the best solution when going with a twin. I've heard both Shep & John @ TRE claim the Exedy twin kills transmissions but I found it hard to believe until reading this thread.
Actually here is the correct way to adjust the clutch pedal after installing a new clutch:

I have the same issue as the OP and almost everyone else on here. I spent a ridiculous amount of money on a cusco twin disc with the auto level feature and everything and the ultimate ratio trans. The car is my DD and I almost never shift into fifth hard but after about 7k miles on my trans it has started to happen that anything over 4k even lightly grinds into fifth. Someone needs to find a solution to this because before the trans was built I asked him if he could do a double synchro fifth and he said he didn't do them anymore. The clutch and the trans was installed by CBRD so I'm pretty sure that everything was done correctly.
Seems to be the only solution to this problem is a dogbox? The funny thing is I bought this car for my first car and I hooked up with an awesome group of people to learn about it. I am now a couple years into ownership and a lot of lessons down the road but one of the first and most important lessons I learned was YOU HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY....not saying that all work thats payed a substantial amount of money for should be bulletproof but I payed a nice amount of money to one of the best people in the world for these transmissions and the playing part isn't happening too well.I am extremely disappointed that I am having these problems after only 7k miles but I can say the rest of the gears and gear-set feels very strong and I do kind of like the way it shifts, it has a couple quirks but nothing to cry over.

I used the TRE method on their website, put the car on jackstands and adjusted it that way, but this guys method seems more detailed and better.
Don't forget the gear drop going into 5th on the stock 8 trans is a large rpm drop and therefore the synchro has to try to slow the gear down more then the other upshifts. At the speeds and loads that the 5th gear upshift occurs at, only a gentle shift will allow for a grind free shift for a long period of time. The faster you attempt that shift the faster you wear that single synchro out and the sooner you get the dreaded 5th gear grind.
Edit: BTW there is a reason I am putting the Shep Ultimate Ratio 5 speed in my car and why I have two extra 5 speeds up there getting built into the Ultimate Ratio 5 Speed that are for sale. I rely on what he is doing and believe it is currently the best for my application.
