so does this happen to all shep tranny's or only recently?

Anyone had one for a long time with no problems? I find it pretty ridiculous to spend 3k on a tranny and have it die within 3k. A tranny should last at least 20k, especially a built one and if you just drive it on the street without clutch dropping...

Has anyone spoken to SHEP and to see if they can resolve this issue, because its not worth paying all this money for something that will just grind.

Is not just a shep thing. I recently had my local shop rebuild my trans. Everything worked great for the street. Did a couple of HPDE track days (hard and fast shifting into 5th, I'm running a red) and guess what? That little annoying blip of a grind is now in 5th. I have an Exedy Twin btw. It happens.........I'm gonna keep shifting it until it explodes.

I did talk to them a couple times......They told me it was time to rebuild it and that the cost would be $900. I told them it hasn't even been a year on the tranny and T-case. I got the "the clutch is the problem" . I went from the stock clutch....He said "that was the problem". I went to the ACT 6 puck sprung with the ACT LW flywheel he said " that is the problem" so now i have the carbonetics twin disk and guess what ......yeah the samn respones. I wasted a lot of money!!! One guy I know has a TRE tranny and a carbonetics twin disk and the thing shifts awsome no 5th gear grinding or any grinding for that matter at all. Then anotherf buddy of mine has a ACT clutch with a Jacks transmission rebuild...he can shift through the gears like nothing even at high RPM's .

I have a built shep 5 spd in my car with ultimate gear ratio. was put in, in march of this yr. Car shifted smooth as butter. Weather got cold (20's and 30's), and it was terrible going into 3rd and 5th. I hesitate to call it a grind, but if I were picky it is fair to call it that. I switched my trans oil to amsoil mtg (redline previously) and it is back to buttery shifts, despite the weather being even colder lately (single digits).

I have an ACT HDSS clutch. 428 whp dynodynamics - 501 whp dynojet

The problem is not limited to Sheptrans. The Evo transmission is basically a close ratio gearbox. With the exception of fifth gear. Fifth is an overdrive and that is where the problem lies. When you shift into fifth the difference between fourth and fifth is a larger spread then the other gears. Therefore the synchronizers job is over worked having to slow down the gear to enable the gear to be engaged. This has been a problem since the beginning of the Evo transmission. The only way to make it last is to not shift it like a race car. Take your time so the synchronizer has time to do it's job. There is no magical fix. If you are running a non stock clutch with higher clamping force it only worsens the problem. The clutch adjustment is crucial.

Im using amsoil as well in my shep trans shift like butter Could his grinding come from slap shifting?

I have heard this to many times.............I say BS! sorry but I pay $3000 for a built tranny I should NOT have to let nothing take it's time. Not trying to be rude just i'm out 3k and the stock tranny shifted better then this crap I have now

Roadrnr is correct. And to the gentlemen that spent 3K and is really ticked off, sorry. I certainly understand your frustration. Like Roadrnr has stated, the rpm drop in 5th places to much load on the 5th syncro hence the grinding. And honestly, everyone with a 5 speed that has had this 5th syncro grind knows this. When you wait a second before shifting into 5th, it slots in smoothly. Try to bang it in and it grinds. Makes perfect sense; place too much load on a component and it will show signs of fatigue sooner rather than later. There is a solution though but it involves more money and a phonecall to TRE.

Well my stock tranny has been through 85,000 miles with only a minor occasional scratch in 5th with fast shifting (except wot shifting) and then I missed shifted 2nd a few times with around 500hp and that was it...then it would only go in cleanly half the time...Had my buddy evodude32 rebuild it and it is working great with roughly 3,000 miles and a built 2.3 and fp red tuned on e85 and 32psi. No probs with 5th...QM twin disc.

I put in amsoil trans oil hoping to fix the issue a couple months back. Same deal. Still grinds into 5th unless I take my time and really baby it in, then it goes in smooth. Lesson learned I guess, just treat 5th gear nice even during track days.

Try using gm syncro mesh fluid in trans clutch pedal play 3/4 of an inch.
if it grinds the syncro ring is stretch and wont slow the gear down. also every time it grinds it dumps metal particles into the trans oil. once the small teeth for meshing have burrs on them it will start blocking shifts all those fluid you are using are way too heavy for that trans.
burnish your syncros in once you get your trans back from rebuild before beating. thats lightly push the shifter into the gear your going into with engine idling and with out the clutch pushed in and holding it there for 5 Seconds DON'T PUSH TOO HARD!

if this is the case then getting the longer evo8 4th gear should fix this problem, but a few people have said that they have gotten that gearing and still it happens. I've got a twin disk, worried now about this issue. we'll see how it goes.

When you change the fluid next time try redline lightweight shockproof and the 5th gear grind should go away. I've had the damn 5th gear grind since shep rebuilt my tranny 60k miles ago. I got the grind about 2-3k right after it was installed. After that I put redline lightweight shockproof in it and no more grind I know it's only a band-aid but it been working for almost 60k miles so I'll keep doing it till the tranny blows up Next time my tranny is going to TRE!!!!!I've road raced my car with the lightweight shockproof in the tranny 4 times so far btw
