FP-Red failure

Greetings from Vienna,

first of all please excuse my english
i'd like to share my problem with you.

When i was driving home from work on monday
i tried to accelerate in first gear. (i'm running 1.8 bar of boost..thats 26psi and
the fp oil line kit)
however as the car reached 1.2 bar i heard a lound whining noise (like stepping on a dogs tail.....hope you know what i mean)
followed by a metallic rattling and a lot of black smoke out of my exhaust.
the engine was still running well so i was sure there something wrong with
my turbo.
i babied the car to my mechanic and he took out the turbo today
and this is what it looks like:

has any of you an idea how it is possible to loose a blade without loosing
some parts of the engine that go trough the hotside?
i bought the charger on the 2nd of november last year and drove 6000miles since than.

best regards,
Luke

The missing blade (hotside) is somewhere inside the exhaust system, dont worry about the engine, take care of the turbo.

Sparks, Throttlebody, etc is all fine. i also dont think that i sucked something.
my airfilter is a good one!
maybe those blades touched the wall and broke away?

wouldn't the compressor blade be damaged if i suck something?

btw. the wheel stucked a bit.

Hmmm... Improperly balanced maybe maybe? That would cause it to hit the wall of the turbine.

....but why did it fail after 6000miles than?
must have failed earlier, or?

let's see what FP says and if it's covered by warranty.

I had a very similar problem.

Was the car running overly rich for an extended period of time, say, sub 10.5AFR at WOT?
Possibly from a poor or overly conservative tune? The additional heat from the unspent gas, from what i understand, can cause this type of failure.

High EGTs are a turbo killer and rich AFRs and/or overly retarded timing will easily put EGTs into the danger zone. I've talked about this with FP and they advise against any prolonged period of EGTs over 1600F (870C). So if you are running too "conservative" of a tune, that could be the culprit.

10W-60 is thick oil. Was this Red purchased directly from and assembled by Forced Performance in the U.S., or was it assembled in the UK by Turbo Dynamics? I remember that Turbo Dynamics used to be the British licensee for FP and that there were a few quality issues with the turbos assembled by them.
