I have had 2 EVO's (1st one totaled by a F-150 rear ending me). The 1st one had 8000 miles, my new one has 5000 miles with one track event on each and everyday in SoCal traffic. And neither one had problems with the clutch wearing out or transmission problems. How is it that the gears and synchros are going out? How many miles are on your cars. Are you drag racing your cars, or do you have crazy horsepower?

im not sure why. I have been to the track, 1/4 and roadcourse. Maybe 15 times down the 1/4 and 2 days on the roadcourse. Im also not a beginner, I work on cars for a living. Some carshave problems, some dont.

I too just recently started having problems shifting into 5th gear, but only at high revs, past 5K. Below that, no problem. Is this covered under warranty?

after further inspection I found the reason for all the gear and synchro damage. The shift forks (3 of them) have way too much play when they ride on the synchro hubs, causing a cocking motion when you move the shifter. This motion makes the hub "crash" into the gear instead of acting smoothly. I have never seen this much play before in all my years as a tech. I will be modifying these shiftforks to properly have a tighter clearance. I can almost guarantee that this mod will cure all my high revs shifting. I will post up on how it turns out.

I have a 3rd gear shift problem now. It "Barks" before it goes in when you accelerate fast. I can Granny it in, no noise or double clutch. I think it's the syncro.

No problem downshifting. It's only 3rd gear. I was told to change the fluid to see if this fixes the problem.

What are my options. My car is completly stock except for cat back exhaust. Will this give me a problem with the warranty?

Will the dealer help me or fight me? I also have 8500 miles on the car.

Any input is appreciated.

some dealers dont care about an exhaust, some will *****. If I were you I would take it to the dealer first. The problem is more than just the synchro. It will need a new synchro, sleeve, and hub. Maybe even a shift fork. These shift forks are fitting way too loose on the synchro sleeve, therefore causing a notchy feel. I hope they revise their design and borrow other companies design for the shift fork (Honda, Nissan,Toyota).

I called the dealer and made an appointment for tommorow morning. I figure they can fix it. If it's the trans, then it's should be under warranty. I only have 8500 miles on the car and I don't beat on it all the time. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks for the input.

I do all my own work on my car. 4000 miles. 1 clutch replaced. 2 Oil changes.

Syncros are perfect. They only grind when I mess up.

Hope this sample helps!

by the way, the TSB everyone asked about , which I found, is only directions for the technicians on how to correctly install the synchro sleeve onto the input shaft. There are no revised parts, at least not yet.

Same problem here; first noticed it about a week ago, but this morning it was really bad... about half the time I shift into 5th I get a grinding sensation (and not in a good way ) through the stick no matter how far I'm clutched in. Just 2500 miles on the car, too.

Man. This thing really has some transmission issues. I'm glad I didn't buy one of these. I don't care how well it handles, things like this on a new car are inexcusable.

Called the service dept. and they weren't surprised at all. I guess they've seen this problem quite a few times. I'll wait until I get back from my holiday trip to get it fixed; in the meantime I've found that double-clutching when shifting into 5th will prevent the grinding.

just got mine back from the dealer today. had second gear and fifth gear done. they had my f-ing car for 2 solid weeks!
i don't beat the car, i'm bmw master tech, i know what abuse does. after all the mess they said the tech line called them asking them not to crack the trans open because this is becoming a problem and they want to fix it themselves. they were going to put in a complete new trans, but, the dealer really jerked me around!
2 weeks? don't tell me it pays 80 hours to overhaul a trans! the tech is supposed to be "awesome"
they threw in a new clutch, for and hours labor and i bought the parts.
the car also had a noisey throw out bearing since day 1.
car has 8200 miles, 2 track days, no power shifting, only a few launches. form 5k slipping it slightly. (just for those who wondered)

a side note: i drove a lancer ES while mine was getting repaired. i don't even consider that car in the same league as the evo. i wish all of the lancer drivers would stay out of the evo discussions!!

isn't this "Evolutionm.net?" not "Lancerm.net?"

just my .02
