Neutral Clutch Engage=Creep Forward

Hey all -

When I engage the clutch (release the pedal) after first starting the car and it's in neutral, the car "presses forward". You can feel it TRY to move. Revs bog a hundred RPM or so, an the car wont move, but you can feel it try.

It happened today for the first time after sitting in the ~20 weather while I was at work for 10 hours.

There's also a rattle that goes away when I depress the pedal. Been like that since I bought the car with 48,000 miles, now has 51,000.

Any ideas of if my clutch is dying or tranny/t-fer case fluid may be too thick for the cold weather? After it warmed up all seems well.

Thanks for feedback!

Where is your clutch engaging along the pedal? Sounds like it needs adjustment.

Starts to engage about 1/4 the way out. But if this was the problem would it need to be in 1st to creep.

The car does it when its in neutral. And not when it is warmed up.

I'm guessing your fluid is thickening up because its cold, mine will do that too, but once the fluid is warm, it doesnt. The rattling is just your Throw Out Bearing, they tend to make noise a lot in Evo's

Yeah, fluid coupling in the transmission. In neutral, I was able to drive my old DSM around the parking lot one bitterly cold morning after working all night. Once I realized the car would move I decided to see how far it would go. This was with Mobil 1 gear oil in the tranny, the first synthetic gear oil. Maybe synthetic but the stuff got stiff in the cold.

Woops, missed the part about it creeping in neutral. What tranny oil is in the car?

Not sure what fluid is in it, just got the car a few months ago. I guess it would be wise to change it out.

Thanks for all your input.

Did that with my '03 Nissan Sentra SER Spec V, '04 Dodge SRT-4 and '06 Mitsubishi Evolution 9 .

Its because the temperatures are cold out and the cold oil drags in the transmission.... Something along those lines...

Ok,,I have been told this a few times now and realize it's what's going on and normalish. Fynny thing is I've owned 21 cars, most manual transmissions, and never experienced this.

Evo/Dsm tranny's must be different, my Civic never did it either, I'm not sure why they do it, they just do, lol

The only time my 1G DSM offered to do this was when I had Mobil 1 in the gearbox. BTW, Mobil 1 was no friend to shifting in the cold either. This was maybe 15 years ago. So, whether you have encountered this or not may depend on the gear oil used.
