I wonder how many people really need this? We have over 650 drag race launches on our diff and it doesn't show any signs of bearing slip. Maybe we just don't make enough torque with the stock turbo....?

we've won 3 solo and 3 prosolo national championships in BSP without one of these. I'd hardly call it a must.

Sorry that was a joke, Referring to it as a turbo. We joke about calling it GT150-R

Here's the new link
HD Side Cover Upgrade

Just posted the link and now for car ****
Thanks for posting that up AWD. I spoke with Jon on Monday and he was telling about this but hadn't put it up on the website yet. Jon's attention to detail is phenominal. I wish he did more than just drivetrain work. I'll take pics when mine gets here but I'm sure someone will beat me to it.

That may be true, but the car that won BSP this year has an aftermarket diff installed.

Will the TRE HD Side Cover Upgrade fit in an Evo V RS rear differential? I believe it is the same differential as used in RS models up to the Evo 9 but I´m not 100% sure.

Thanks,

Ricardo

agreed, and same for the car that won the 3 years previous to that. But none of them have this new side cover.

Now don't get me wrong, we send a LOT of stuff to Jon and he does incredible work. Obviously there is a deficiency that this part makes better, i'm just not sure at what level it becomes money well spent. Sub 1.5sec 60' times or 500+ ft/lb track cars...maybe?

Is there a very generic how-to to install this part? Or is it just unbolt the rear diff, etc and it's right there to take off the stock on put on the new?

And is the focus of this part for protecting the differential during clutch dumps only? That's what the website link seems to be implying. ie, for coming out of corners WOT etc this part doesn't come into play? I never really launch my car..

From personal experience,

Jon disassemble my differential right in front of me. I personal saw the bearing fall off the diff with out any aid of a tool; I’ve watch more then my share of Evos break the rear differential. Why do you think companies offer a whole replacements differential for the Evo. Jon isn’t doing this because it’s some sales gimmick. He sees what is wrong and finds a way to fix it. Jon also consults with other engineers and people in the same trade to help confirm his findings. This fixes a very crucial issue. If you don’t want it then direct the negative energy elsewhere. Ultimately it’s your money, do what you want with it. No one is cramming this down your throat, but from what I’ve seen I’m sold and will be having him install this on my personal Evo.

If you know how to properly preload a rear diff then you should be able to do it yourself. But if you don't… I would leave it to the experts.

Lots of the damage is done by launching a car. Even if you don't launch the car you will still see the bearing start to get loose because the wall that holds the bearing is just too thin.

I've got a question for you. What rear diff are you using and why did you replace the stock diff??

Thank you

Currently an OS Giken rear diff, but also have run a cusco and modified stock previously. The stock diff was replaced because it's slow.

Maybe you could help us out since you've obviously experienced this problem. How much torque/power are you making? What are your normal 60' times? How many launches had you done before your bearing fell off?

It's not necessarily a defect that is caused by modification, which is only necessary in a car that has been heavily modified. The webpage description described and shows the problem -- the factory side cover flexes and the portion of the cover on which the bearing sits eventually allows the bearing to spin which damages the housing and the relationship between the parts, causing the eventual breakage. It can happen on stock cars in which the rear differential is repeatedly loaded. Think dropping the clutch

The fix TRE conceived and now offers is a replacement side cover that is stronger and allows the use of a larger bearing.
