Evo 9 MR's tranny

I'm debating on buying a regular 9 or an MR but I've heard stories of how weak the 6 speed tranny is. Is it really that weak? How much hp can it handle? Also, how much stronger is the 5 speed than the 6 speed?

Here's what I did: I highlighted "6 speed" in your post, copied and pasted it into Search, configured the app to search for thread titles on this forum, and got these:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...weak-link.html
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...s-6-speed.html

There are more discussions just like it. Good luck.

Woka woka. If you were closer I'd offer to trade you for my 5 speed. If you had one.

Shep 6 speed is pretty much out, so I'd say go with a 6 speed.

Isn't the sheps 6 supposed to cost a arm and leg?? Id just get an mr drive it and when u get to that point of big power send it to sheps and pay extra 450 for the 5 spd.

I broke my 6-spd at 400 whp with no launches (street/road racing) and replaced it with a Shep 5-spd. I couldn't be happier, the 5-spd is massively better than the 6-spd imo.

You must be a really bad driver then?

I'm close to 400 whp and even more tq and my 6 speed doesn't miss a beat. That includes multiple passes down the 1/4 as well. Car is now at 37k miles, DD', stock clutch, stock trans.

My opinion obviously but I wouldn't own an Evo if they only came with 5 speeds, would have kept my STI.

i make a good bit of power on the 6 speed and i have no issues at all. granted i dont launch or abuse my car, so that probably plays a big part in it

Like others have said, it really depends on how you drive your car. I'm not a very aggressive driver, so I purchased a healthy MR. I love the way it feels and shifts and I'm happy with stock power levels. Other than a moderate tune, I'm not going for any more power. So until the trans becomes a problem, I simply dont worry about it. Just research before you buy, and make sure its what you want.
