Replacing Evo9 Clutch for $1800 reasonable??

Sorry to ask a dumb question. I've been reading around for a week and many people say the labor is about 6 hours, but I went to Faxon (MACH III) at Ocean ave. in SF. They charge me 10 hours labor for around $940 and $850 for the clutch and flywheel (I think it's stage one, maybe the exede?) total he quoted me for $1790 for everything. My friend's STi is only $1600 even at dealer with stock parts, so I wonder if it's reasonable for a garage not dealer even more expensive than the STi at dealer. Also that some people said it only cost about $600 for the labor for many places but I don't even know who can do the Evo with cheap labor. and i also called the dealer they quoted me 11 hours and $2300 for everything!!! some said they go to dealer for only $1300 with parts?!?! how come so big different?! Can someone please give me some advice because I've been so frustrating about this... I'm so broke just trying to save every penny I can.... sorry again to ask such a dumb question.
Thanks in ADVANCE!!!!!!

Well, the $600 should be right on the money for the labor, both clutch jobs I have had that is what the labor was, then add fluids, the clutch and flywheel. I would say you need to find a shop that knows how to work on Evo's and take it to them. I am not able to read Japanese so I can't recommend anywhere that you can take it to. 10hrs is because they don't know how to do it. $850 for clutch and flywheel seems about right, but why not do a little research and buy the correct clutch, prob save some money and then take it to the right people that know how to do it. For $2300 you should be able to get an Exedy Hyper Twin HD installed.

Edit: Oh, duh...your in Cali, not sure who is out there but someone else will chime in.

Yeah that is way too much money for a clutch job.

My mechanic would only charge $500 for labor.

nut up and just do it yourself. if you don't already own any, you can get all the tools you need for less then 100 bucks..print out directions and just follow them..after all its just nuts and bolts..you take them out and put them back in, doesn't require skill. now you can keep saving all your pennies.

Seems high to me. You can look up clutch kits for lets say 500. Labor and fluids rounded up to 700 with a 600 labor charge. Around 1200 for everything

I have absolutely 0 knowledge on mechanics.

Well I can't read Chinese either, but I guess I could read slower too. I think you should start a new thread, entitled "Where to get a Clutch Job in South Cali?". Then in the thread ask what clutch and how much it should cost in the area. You should also give info on modifications/power level and goals of the car so that the proper clutch can be recommended.

Actually I'm in NorCal. It's full stock and not planning to mod. However, I'm looking for a clutch for street and can take somewhat abuse sometime and at least last longer than the stock one then it's all fine to me. I think my car is like 300HP i don't know the exact tho it only has a cat back mod and WORKS flash that's all. any clutch should work, I'm just trying to save money on labor because i think they are ripping me off for about $1000 labor.

+1 for ~500 labor. ER can do it in under 5 hours from what I've heard. Doesn't help much seeing as they're pretty far away, but as a reference.

Yea, didn't help, but reference did helped. why the hell did they quoted me $1000, that's no way when i saw everyone was saying around $500-$650. I thought that place was reputable enough for evo owners to go, now i'm so clueless and lost... I need to get it done ASAP since it's slipping badly (still drivable tho).

The 10 hours is what the labor time guide says it is. Depending on the labor rate of the shop, it's up there. But usually a specialty shop will charge you 5.5hours @ around $100/per hour.

Yes, some people do it themself, but time is money. If you have no experience with it and can't have your car down for too long, it is definately worth a trip to the shop, especially if they can get it back to you in a day.
