Question Engine chatter???

Hey guys, just checking to see if anyone else has experienced this. It has happened about a dozen times in the past two months or so. I'll be driving on the freeway with light throttle pressure. Just enough to maintain a constant speed (usually about 85 mph). Suddenly it will feel like my clutch stopped grabbing, car slows down. I apply throttle to get speed up again. Engine revs??, boost raises??, exhaust sounds funny (kinda pop, pop, pop but not like a misfire)??, engine sputters??, car refuses to accelerate?? I then completely release the throttle and the car is ok.

I don't want to take it to a dealership. I already know what they will say. something stupid like "it's your exhaust and you just voided your warranty, thanks, drive home safely". Don't feel like dealing with stupidity.

Thanks in advance.

What mods do you have? and what is was the air temp around the time its happening? And how long has the car been running (not if the engine is warm, but how long have you been driving it from when you started the engine)

All those factors will have an effect on the suggestions I can give you.

However if its been very cool out, and the engine isn't totally warmed up, it could be fuel cut or spark quench. Another thought is if you have an open element air filter, vibration or the air volume at that speed could be giving the MAF sensor bad readings which can then cause sudden random changes to the closed loop operation, sometimes that can lead to it triggering fuel cut.

First of all, let me say to wcevo8tech, thank you for your honesty. I'm sure that not many other mitsu techs/employees who frequent this site would openly admit who they work for. Some people may be a little apprehensive on this site due to listing thier exact location, mods and their activities that they engage in on a daily basis with their cars.

You know what MalibuJack, you are right. It has been pretty cold lately. In fact the nights that this happened, were all very cold nights. The car had been running for approximately 20 minutes, coasting, nothing hard. I have a newly replaced stock filter in the car so it couldn't be that.

I think that you are probably right. I was hoping that someone else would come to this conclusion and not say "you blew your engine dummy". Thanks.

If anyone else has a theory, glad to hear it.

How many miles do you have on the car? Have you launched it any? Sounds to me like it could possibly be a clutch problem? Apparently in the Evo as the clutch wears it begins to make a slight chattering noise. Just my theory, could very well be wrong.

No, don't think it's a clutch problem. I may be wrong though. Not a mechanic. The clutch actually grabs really strong.

As far as mods go:

Vishnu Stage 1
clutch pill removed
SS clutch line

And yes, I have launched it hard many times. No idea how many. Been to the track twice though. Worst launch I have done was at approximately 5600 rpms :/. With that, I turned a 13.08 I think it was at 101 mph. That was done with about 16000 miles on car, stock clutch etc.
