Arrow Can I pull JUST the shortblock and leave trans/tc in place? (head off)

I'm going to pull the head off my motor anyday now and need to eventually need to get to the clutch because of disengagement issues, instead of messing with the trans/axles/transfer case could I just take the motor out from above? and leave the trans and everything else in place? The only thing it basically will be is a shortblock with some of the front brackets and accessories, no cams, intake or exhaust manifolds to get in the way.

Can this be done, or is there not enough room for the input shaft to slide out of the clutch or something else?

I pulled my motor out of the bottom of the car, and out of the passenger side wheel well. If you jack the car up to the highest notch on a jack stand, it is enough to get the motor out with no head, and no oil pan on it. I just put a 2x10 board on the floor so I didn't set the motor on the concrete. Worked pretty good, I was able to stand in between the block and a/c condenser, grab the block, slide it off the input shaft, and set it down on the 2x10. Climbed out of the engine bay, and slid the short block out through the wheel well.

nah..idk bout leavin the trans in the car and pullin motor...its alot eaiser to pull both together from the top....

i've done both ways i removed head and dropped shortblock from bottom...

i think the easiest way was from top....with tranny connected...transfer case disc. and off to the side.

you def have enough room to pull motor and tranny together from top.

i do it separately.. pull the head, set it aside.. then pull the trans.. set it aside etc..

it would be easier to just remove the hood from the car and pull out the entire thing in one piece if you gotta work on it all anyways.

just make sure you unbolt the trans from the tcase before you attempt to pull it all out.

looks like sharkm87 beat me to it.

Hmm I really don't wanna mess with the trans and tc and all that junk, but once I have the head off I'll take the easiest route, just got the car and not used to havin a car with a transfer case

Actually, the axles are really easy to pull on these, so taking it all out from the top is pretty easy, I didn't even have to remove my hood.

I got the head and intake off and got tons of room to get to the all the tc and trans bolts (pics in another thread I just made) and going to seperate the tc from the trans and pull the motor and trans out together so I'm not bending over or layin on my back changing a clutch since I'm not on a lift.
