Evo 9 after new clutch install 1st gear lockout. Help!

Alright.. where to start. I just completed my clutch install. Done by myself and a friend. We have everything back together. All new fluids. Acd bled. Clutch pedal adjusted. ACT extreme replaced an Exedy stage 1. When it was up on stands it wouldn't go into first. It felt like a lockout, but stiffer. We finally got it to go into first and took it for a 10min testdrive. Went into first perfectly, if not better than before because of new fluid. The last time i go to put it into first to pull into the driveway it didn't go in. And hasn't since. We've tried everything we can think of..

I'd like to add that we did end up breaking the clutch shield/bellhousing. I got a new one from mitsu and we were very careful to put everything back as it was in the transmission case.

There is a proper method to adjusting the clutch pedal rod. Did you follow the procedure or did you guess how long/short it should be?

I followed proper procedure. That didn't work so I played around with a couple lengths.

As it turns out, we got it working yesterday. Oddly enough I still don't know what the issue is. I drained a tad of the trans fluid because we put 3 quarts in thinking all of the old fluid was drained, it wasn't. There was a bit left, making it over full and pressurizing the case more than it should have been. As well as looking around on some of the forums, there was a guy that said to go directly from 4th to first and it'll slide in. It did.

So as it sits, I have 70-80 miles on the new clutch and everything is perfect. I honestly don't know what the problem was directly. Maybe this will help someone in the future.

Thanks,
Aaron

You have to break the clutch in, am I right? I'm guessing it needed a little wear.

Yes, I'm currently breaking it in. But honestly it didn't even feel like it was going into gear. Like a lockout. We didn't think it was attributed to wear because I drove it around starting in second, I'm sure that knocked the "new" off of the clutch. It was probably a combination of things.
