Driveshaft Dilemma
Driveshaft Dilemma
So recently I started hearing some noise coming from under my car making corners and such. They are clucking noises which I thought could be coming from the t-case. Then I was thinking to myself "Wait, I just had my t-case rebuilt by Shep and It has a stg2 w/lsd & Rem treatment on the gears"...so I doubt the case is blown.
So I decided to do a little investigation and found out that one of the driveshaft carrier bushings had alot of play in it. Which was causing the driveshaft to move up and down quite a bit. Simple fix right...tighten it up and it be done with. This was not the case. I hit the bolts with pb blaster and let them sit before I touched them to insure no studs would snap. Well guess what thats exactly what happened.
Now since the stud snapped I have no clue how to get it out? It looks like its a drop in stud from the top of the skid plate which is tack welded to the car. Wish It was as simple as twist the stud out and screw in another one...but I why would it be that simple.

Any advice to get my daily back on the road again would be much appreciated.

Have you looked from inside the car to see how the bolt is attached? It could be a bolt that has the head sit in a recessed area to keep it from spinning.
Its really hard to tell without actually being under the car, but the picture you posted almost looks like a rivot nut/nut sert with the bolt threading through it. If it is a nut sert then it shouldnt be too much work to replace.
Hope this helps man....GL

your best bet is to look underneath the carpet to see if its a bolt threaded through the whole and fastened or if its tack welded, if its threaded through the hole, get yourself one of those dye and tap kits, find the thread pitch of that bolt, go to an ACE hardware or lowes etc, match up a bolt slip it through tighten it up your good, if its tack welded youll still need to find a bolt that long anyway but you might have to shave to make it same length and then tack weld it in place. Best bet is to call the dealer to find out if that bolt holding the carrier bearing assy is tack welded or a slip in style bolt.
good luck man
btw never seen that before on a carrier bearing bolt, did you use impact tools or rachet and sockets to remove?

Hey man real talk, you need to take your seats, center counsel, and carpet out and find out where that stud is and hope it's not welded in. If so you will have to drill it out and drop another bolt through and re-weld. GL
