Red Line Engine break in additive

Has anyone used this with API rated oils such as Mobil 1? I've always thought it was bad to add stuff to oil but this seems like it would remedy some of the EPA mandated changes to off the shelf oil.

http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=121&pcid=1

Provides conventional motor oils with antiwear additives like zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP) necessary to protect against camshaft and valvetrain damage on break-in

Allow pistons rings to seat properly with less-slick oil, while antiwear additives protect other engines components to avoid excessive wear

Can also be used in conventional and synthetic oils during regular operation, providing an extra package of protection otherwise not found in most motor oils
16oz bottle treats up to 12 quarts of motor oil--in many cases, one bottle can serve two engines or oil changes

Looks like it adds a healthy bump of zinc and phosphorous. I'm intrigued.

Isn't Brad Penn regular oil (non-synthetic). Mobil one is easier to find and at times can be bought on sale.

We use those additives to break in cams in air cooled porsche engines, and some other motors we have done at work. If you use a good, high quality oil you wont need to add stuff like this with more modern engines. There is a saying, "Too much of anything is bad", Do you realy think driving around with say,for example, 11,000 ppm zppd is gonna be good for your engine?.

Zppd and phos are good antiwear agents but doesnt mean you want to load up your engine oil with pure zinc.

yeah, that woudn't be good to overdose with an entire bottle. I was just thinking of its use to supplement reduction of it in the new reformulations. Of course then you get into guessing on say what a quarter of it will actually add.

I'll have to search for it but I've seen it claimed that mixing 50 50 of Mobil1 Racing 4T 10W40 and Mobil1 0W40 gives the right sort of ZDDP numbers ie ~ 12-1300 PPM .
The person said that the 0W40 came out at 1000 and 1100 PPM where the Racing 4T 10W40 was around 1600 and 1700 PPM .
I think his message is that 1000/1100 is bit low and 1600/1700 too hard on cats .
I don't think there is a 0W or 10W40 Mobil1 synthetic out with 1200/1300 PPM of the anti wear additives .

Nothing stopping you mixing the two and the 0W40 half is cheaper than the 4T so save a few bucks and your cat by not using straight 4T .

Cats are fine with a lot of zinc unless you burn 1qt every 500 miles. If you do burn that much, fix your motor!

Yeah well in Australia good oil is expensive , when is Walmart starting here again ?
To give you some idea the only source of M1 4T 10W40 here sells it at $15.50 a quart or 15 each for the carton of 6 .
The 0W40 is a bit better at $11.50 ea or $11 ea for 6 .

I'll have to double check if that 0W40 M1 is the German one or not , what is the ZDDP difference BTW .

Cheers A .
