Cruddy/Corroded Valves? Pics Inside...

OK so I'm nearing the end of my engine build (or so I thought) and I was getting ready to put the head on so I flipped it over to clean the surface and noticed this...

Is this actual corrosion or something else? A few of the valves definitely have the texture of rust so I'm not sure. Are these done for or will the crud burn off?

Thanks!

looks like 1 and 4 are burning oil. 2 and 3 burning some from the overlap of 1 and 4.

I see...what say you on the condition of the valves themselves? Are they good to use again or toast?

Thanks

Ya, also, when you say flip over, do you mean you had the head down on the valve side? If so, you probably bent a valve.

And, you built your block brand spanking new, why would you want old used valves? Throw new seals and valves in that *****.

You can't just clean a head and put it back on. You have to shave it too.

How the hell did I bend a valve? The springs/retainers are holding everything up.

And if the head is within tolerances and not warped, it can be reinstalled without a resurfacing. But since I prob need new valves, I'll get it done anyways after a hot tank.

Its generally taught when taking off a cyilnder head to not let it rest on the combustion chamber side.

WHY? Its not so much that you WILL bend valves on every head you work on when you rest it on the combustion chamber, but its a good habit to practice. Also why rest the head on its sealing surface? Ideally you can get a cylinder head stand for it or I would rest it on its sides or if you are determinded to rest it on the combustion chamber put some pieces of wood on the edges so the combusiton chambers dont contact the ground directly.

Crankshafts as well, they should be standing up or prefferably, hanging. you shouldnt rest them on the counterweghts. my .02

looks like a combination of oil and carbon build up there, spray some type of cleaner preferably like a wd40 or somethin like that, and clean the head part to combustion chamber as much as you can, in all honesty dont lay it down valves facing down. Lay it on its side or on top of somethin as it can stay up right off the table being held up. Good luck man.

The head was never built before...it had springs and cams and new seals installed maybe 5-6k miles prior but those are stock valves with 60k miles.

Interesting that its on cyl 1+4. I see youre running the stock IM. For S+G's check your Pcv valve and make sure your intercooler piping is free of oil.
Although it looks like you may have some worn valve guides, from the oil consumption.
History on the engine?? Engine failure?

On a side note, you store cranks standing up to prevent warping. I don't see any real issues storing a head comb chamber facing down as long as there was some common sense as to where it is being stored.

Spun the #4 rod bearing in the old engine. LICP has had some oil in it for a while now due to blow by (been too lazy to get a catch can).

I thought valve guides are usually good for the life of the vehicle?
