Tranny is grinding

5th gear has always been stiff. 2nd gear always skipped if not shifted perfectly. Now 5th gear grinds no matter what I do, and so does 2nd. Car has 10,000 miles. I haven't replaced the tranny or case fluids yet, changed oil religiously at under 3k miles and mostly highway miles put on the car. Never raced. I have a shifter knob on it, but I think I definitely qualify for warranty work here. Im very upset about this, anyone have these problems?

Sounds to me like your syncros are out. 5th gear usually goes out if someone is racing and miss-shifts from 2nd to 5th.

I can't say I haven't driven the car hard from time to time, but racing? No....I figured this gearbox would withstand much more than I have given to it......its ridiculous.

Not gearbox, synchros....If say you are just going from WOT and are shifting from 2nd at 6000rpms and miss 3rd jump into 5th. Car bogs, but nothing feels wrong....guess what...you just killed the synchro.

has anyone tried replacing the fluid in their trannies with a better fluid, like GM Synchromesh, or synchroshift, or the new penzoil fluid(same exact thing as GM's btw, just a lower price tag) it works wonders on DSM's, just wondering if anyone has tried it on your trannies yet

I've never missed the 2nd to 3rd shift and hardly done the WOT thing. Regardless of whats happened, I figured the car would not begin to show signs of wear after 10K miles. I want the car fixed and I dont think it is unreasonable to feel I have a right to stick to my guns on that. I drive the car as a daily driver with mostly highway miles. Im just disappointed. I wouldn't be so upset if this wasn't a reported problem on other vehicles.

Yes plenty of use have changed the tranny oil. Most people seem to like red line. I used Royal Purple and it made a HUGE difference. I highly recommend you change the tranny and diff. fluids. Your car will shift much smoother. I've never used Penzoil oils. That is one of the worse oils in the market. That's just my opinion but i woudn't use that oil.

There is a tsb, technical service bulletin, for the 5th gear syncro.
They will replace it.
Take it into your Mits dealer and tell them about the tsb.

As for the other gears grinding, grab a beer and join everyone else in line. I have this in every gear about 60% of the time.

Red line in tranny and diff. And it dosnt do Jack.

Good luck with your 5th gear snycro!

Dude just take it to the dealer. I take it your car is stock. You won't have a warranty issue there!!! Many people are having this problem and as for what i can remember, Mitsu is fixing the problem under warranty.

Would you guys recomend I take it to the dealer first? If they do replace any parts, Im going to bring my own fluids in to have them used instead of the OEM stuff, or change it out very soon after at the very least...

Vegas boy....you can't fix the syncros. The dealer has to replace them for you.

I think I should buy a new clutch and have them put it in as well, even though my clutch is in perfect shape. I wonder if they would charge me labor....but I can't afford to drop 1200 on a cusco clutch
