is there a way to lock the mivec gear during timing install?
Im getting ready to do the timing. I did it about 3 weeks ago. I didnt tq the tensioner pulley down tight enough and the timing belt slipped. All things aside, I will get my head back soon and ready to re-install.
When I did the timing the 1st time. My mivec gear moved just like the exhaust. There was no play in it. It was actually a pita. Now, the gear moves freely back and fourth, which I read is normal, cause there is no pressure.
So I just line this gear up like normal? The first crank of the car will build enough pressure to hold the gear in relationship to the cam?

Maybe what you need is a cam alignment tool?? - several are available. The tool is placed between the two cam sprockets and engages the teeth. When in place the sprockets can't move.
As stated above I use these. Makes life much easier

i Dont know if this will help but...
you can turn the oil pump with a electric drill when the cambelt is off.
This will fill the mivec cam gear up with oil, and it will stop it moving when you are trying to time it.
I Did this on my car to ensure everything was prelubed before i timed up and started the engine.
Cheers, Mike

Thats a good idea. I got the cam gear tool to hold the gears as I time it. I was just worried about 1st start up. The gear would turn in advance to the camshaft until the pressure built up and it made the gear move the same time as the camshaft.
Well, timing is done. Car fired right up! It doesnt make any abnormal noises. I still got a little bit of a lifter tick, from bleeding the lifters.
The belt feels pretty damn tight though. The tensioner is set dead on. The pin slid in and out freely after waiting the 15 minutes after I cranked it over twice. Im guessing its just the greddy belt making it a little tighter. Now I am worried about the extra wear it might put on everything.
I am contemplating taking it all back apart and going with oem now. Just something I am worried about.

good work!
if you dont like the tight belt, you could always just try the OEM belt.
Do you have your old one there?
I know they aren't very expensive, just takes time to setup.
I ordered one of those Jaysracing kits too!

yea, Im tempted to go oem. All this reading about the kevlars throwing the oil pumps and whatnot has me worried now lol. The belt has maybe 6mm of deflection between the gears. It doesnt make any noise or anything. But it just seems a little too tight for comfort lol.
