MIVEC Noise
MIVEC Noise
I just got done assembling a new engine, and when I turn it over, the MIVEC gear is making a clanking noise after a full rotation. This happens when turning it over by hand, and also now that it's in the car, when starting the car.
Am I missing something? I watched with the valve cover off, and when you turn the motor over, it gets to a point where it gets more difficult because the valve springs are pushing back, and it SNAPS or POPS sort-of once, and you can see the intake cam move.
There is a little play in the cam gear when turning the motor over before it engages the intake cam and starts tuning it. Is this normal, or is it possible that something broke in the MIVEC gear when my last motor put a rod through the block? Thanks!

take out the spark plugs, and crank the engine over to get oil pressure.
You'll probably find there is no oil in the mivec gear, so it's flopping about.
If it's taking ages to get oil pressure, take off the oil filter and crank until you get a little amount of oil coming out. Then refit the oil filter and crank it over again.
