evo 8 cam install helpp?

so I'm installing my gsc s2 cams soon and I just had a quick question... I've been getting mixed answers about using the tensioner tool. Has anyone NOT used the tensioner tool and had a successful cam install?

I'll be using this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex-43BYrjP0 plus the help of some friends that have installed cams in other cars to do the install...

I don't have the tensioner tool and I'd rather not buy one for $50 if I'm only using it once...

It can be done without the tool, it just takes a whole lot longer. With the tool and some zip ties I did the whole thing in under a hour.

I made one myself for under 5 dollars

Just used two nuts locked em together, so didn't need the welding.

It releases the tension on the timing belt to give it slack so when you pop off the cam gears there is no tension. Also note I made my own and it started to bend on the 2nd use so I bought a real one off ebay. They aren't expensive at all.

Also...I *BELIEVE* you can use the factory battery hold down rods as the tensioner tool.

use the tool if you dont the hydro tensioner will full extend and you have to pull the whole timing beltcover, waterpump pully, and belt off to reset the tensioner alot of wasted time just get the tool off ebay or make your own

You can use the battery hold down butt I'm pretty sure you have to cut more threads. I got a long threaded rod from napa and 2 nuts tightened against each other and worked perfect. Mine was black so I think it was hardened steel which is better just lube it up good with antiseize and turn it slow and back and forth to clean out any rust or dirt, in the threads and don't need to turn it till it stops which will bottom out the tensioner. Keep the belt somewhat tight with the zipties so it can't come off the cogs on the pullies
