Cams Reviews

I'm amazed to find that a search for cams results in nothing but useless info. I thought by now there would be more info on cams.

I'm looking to put 272 ex / 264 in HKS cams in my evo. I'd love to hear what people think of their cams, no matter what the size (264/264, 272/272, 269/269 etc).

How's the driveability? Does it feel too rugged, unrefined? Does it stall out ever?

Also, does it rev slower now? I beleive the HKS cams are not hollow like the stock cams. I'm wondering if it revs a little slower now as a result.

Thanks guys!

Rob

Ripps hard core! Think about stock evo max TQ and imagine that up top. It revs well the power overcomes the hollowness. The cams made more of a differenct on the butt dyno than a full turboback and computer! There is some lumpyness at idle but livable. I have 272E/264I

264/264 best combo for me, not a lumpy idle, and dyno proved +35hp increase.

cam gears are not needed but it may help with some tuning. It runs smooth and powerful without them though.

I run with and without a 2 degree retard and prefer the cam gears they dont make a huge difference but the pull and transition in the higher rpms is fantastic

So whats the best cams for a stock turbo? 264/264 or 264/272? Im doing cams this week and it would be great to know. Some say go with 264/264 and others say to do the split. Ive heard that if your going to stick with the stock turbo and not rev past 8k rpms then the 264/272 setup will only hurt the idol and do nothing for power? What do you guys think?

I have HKS 272/272 and I love em!
They're a little lopey at idle, but you can tune that out with an SAFC. Personally, I can deal with the rough idle, and to be honest, I kinda like it. :-)

Pulls like a prom date giving her first handjob. I highly recommend this mod to anyone who's not so much of a pansy that a rough idle scares him.

Car has an absolutely SICK top end now. Feels like it wants to rev another 2k rpm when fuel cut hits. Sick.

Did I mention how fuggin sick it is?

Hey MP5 if you had to do it over again would you still go with the split cams, or just get the straight 264's?

Thanks

No way I would consider 272s but the staggar is really a rocking setup. I wouldnt consider 264s and feel the staggar is very will matched to the stock turbo!

No one has reviewed the works cam setup yet. I would wait to see what kind of gains the works cams make and idle like before upgradeing if I were in your shoes. Without a bigger turbo I dont think the 272 intake is really nessesary by what I've heard.

My 2 cents.

PS maybe I can make the next SoCal evo meet and you can take me for a ride after you get your new cams Rob . Looks like I cant get an evo for another month or so. $$$ is a *****.
