cam gears worth it?
cam gears worth it?
I have a evo 8, with all the basic bolt on, complete exhaust, fuel pump, manual boost controller, intercooler hardpipes, intake, tune and GSC S2 cams with springs and retainers, etc (maybe I'm forgetting little things)
Now I ordered the fp green turbo, with bigger injectors.
I think I'm done modding, for now. But some friends are telling me to get cam gears to get the best of the cams and the whole setup
Do I really need them? I don't have access to AWD dyno, so no fine tuning on the cams can't be done.
I don't think is worth it, I'm I wrong?
Thanks for your replies

You can tune cam gears on the street with VDR or similar "road dyno" program.
If you will pick up power or not depends on the cams and the rest of your setup.
On my Comp 280+ cams I picked up 15HP above 6000 RPM for equal loses below 6000 RPM. This is on the stock turbo at the 360HP level. I leave them at 0/0 for the most part though as it provided the best overall powerband.
On a friends GT42R Altrac with Kelford cams, we managed to pick up a whole 5HP at the 900HP level. Although, that was after he degreed the cams in to the cam card and found one cam to be about 5 degrees off. I imagine it wasn't the cam actually off that far, but it was likely due to the fact he had machined the block and head multiple times which will impact cam timing. Either way though, the adjustable cam gear allowed him to maximize his cam timing to the proper specifications.

If your running a 2.0 there is no reason for gears....a quality cam is already degreed when installed a factory zero. 4g64 has a taller deck so you'll wanna get gears to pull cams back to spec....or be precise with factory gears with a half tooth off.
