My 10 Cents

The manual states 10 30, 5 30 is very thin for a turbo charged car. Maybe if you live in extreme cold it would be find, but anywhere else I would stick with what they recomend which is 10 30. Castrol Syntec is 100% synthetic, as is Mobil, but I prefer to use Amzoil.

NO IT IS NOT!!!!!

It says full synthetic on the container, but it is a class 3 synthetic!! Mobil 1 even tried to sue them over this a while ago for false advertising. The only castrol that is fully synthetic is RS, which you can only get at the BMW dealership.

BTW, I am in no way saying mobile 1 is great, as it is not, but castrol syntec is a step down if anything.

Choosing the right oil is very important, engine life and performance depands on it. Dealer recommand 10 w30 Mobile on because its not too thin for the turbo 5 w30 is too thin and it will hurt the turbo on th long run.

If your definition of "synthetic" is "very refined crude oil" then, yes. Syntec 5w-30 is 100% synthetic.

However, there was a time when this couldn't have been called synthetic. Mobil1 and Amsoil are both made of polyalphaolefins, which are long-chain hydrocarbons created by SYNTHESIS. They take short gaseous HCs and stick 'em together to make a liquid.

My rationale for asking was to find out WHY you chose certain oils. No one oil is 'the best'. Plus, how many of you guys do oil analysis? If you don't, and don't have much other Evo data, you're merely guessing on which is the 'best' oil.

Too thin at temperature, no. They are essentially the same viscosity of 10.0cSt at 100C. But, the 5w-30 is less shear resistant. In the long run, 5w-30 has a better CHANCE of shearing to a 20 weight.

Will it necessarily? No. But if you don't need those extra few degrees down below zero, why chance

Oil analysis done on both Mobile 1 and Castrol Syntec. Castrol did much better!

I'd like to see the data too. I have seen analysises of many things, but haven't yet seen one with the Evo.

My father is getting to the the first oil change and i'd like to suggest something better than "this is what works well in other turbo applications".

Please post the data-- for those that use oil analysis as a guide, your data would be invaluable.

Sorry! Shouldn't have said nothing since I have no analysis data to prove myself. But you could not flame and just take my word for it. An analysis was done on the Mobile 1 right after I blew my car up. So after I got it fixed, I had another done on the Castrol and it turned out much better. Sorry guys that I have nothing to back this up, but I wouldn't run it in my car if it wasn't good in it.
Especially after I just spent 3,000.00 in repairs right?!

Just to clarify this-- you had "analysis" done, but did not receive any hard-copy of the report or readings?

Who did the analysis?

I'm not saying the oil you're running is "bad". With the API-SL standard, i don't think any oil on the shelves is bad-- but for the 5 dollar pricepoint, i think there are 'good' and 'mediocre'.

Its known that mobil made the first synthetic oil ever. No one was even close when they did it. I have never had a problem with it. infact in my s2000 i run out of oil one day(leak out) while installing a turbo and nothing happend to the engine. All pro told me the mobile Sticks in the piston wall and thats what saved my s2000.
