Mobil 1 Grade
I dunno where i saw it was a while back, but its there i will look. These engine get fired up in the factory for some time on a stand and thats explain why they fill them up with Sync oil from the first day. Even the head manager of the service department asured me that they where broken in, because i was sooo worried about that though my evo had only 3 miles on her. My father used to race cars and he told me the same thing all true racing cars get broken in before they sell them.
I read something about Mobil 1 race oil. There was a short announcement on the Mobil web site in the fall but I've not read anything since then. Anybody know what's going on and if it would be good for the EVO?

The Racing oil likely won't be API certified which means higher levels of anti-wear and extreme pressure additives. It should, however, contain a full set of detergents and dispersants which will allow use in street vehicles. The weight is 0w-30 and will probably be slightly thicker than the current array of xw-30 offerings, at ~11cSt.
However "soon" is, i'm not sure. Mobil is redesigning their webpage to coincide with the release of 1-R.
Whether it will be "good" for the Evo is up to analysis and data. The Mobil 1 10w-30 analysis that was posted showed a base oil that had more than its share of beating.

First a little update on the M1 Racing. It is available through your better Mobil lube channels (read: not Target/Walmart). I did find a place online selling it for $10.95 or 9.95 for 6qt+.
On the topic of what i recommend, I like Redline. Being generally group V (esters and the like) it has very good shear resistance. The additive pack is VERY heavy on moly for it's EP add. Amsoil and Mobil 1 are using a little more 'advanced' package of Boron and much less Moly.
The only problem with the POE (polyol esters) used in Redline is they liberate a lot of loose lead so in analysis you see a lot (frightening amounts actually) of lead until it gets under control.
Esters make great lubes and Redline is one of the cheapest and most available of these.

Mobil 1 is tha shiznitz...I know a guy who has used Mobil 1 in his Jetta since the beginning...he's got over 300,000 miles on the original engine and it still runs great.
I'd use the
recommended 10W-30 unless you live in a northern city where it regularly gets below 0 degrees F.
As far as engines being broken in at the factory, I can only speak for Corvettes...I have been to the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky...every new Corvette that comes off the line is placed on a dyno and run at WOT through the gears to over 150 MPH to verify engine performance. It is probable that other manufacturers do something similar with their performance cars, but I do know that Chevrolet does it with the Vette.

Sure you don't mean 15w-50? It says "racing" but it's not really a racing oil. It's more of a very thick street oil. It probably has the best technology that Mobil 1 has since it is the thickest, but it is TOO thick for street use. 40wt would be the highest i would suggest going unless you really have a great need (street racing isn't one of them)

This race oil that M1 is offering, is it supposed to protect during cold starts? Or is it more like a true race oil that should be preheated before engine is started?

Whats interesting, i guess the biggest question of "why 50wt" for me, 30wt and 40wt oils are becoming very shear stable, why run an oil that will 'sap' horsepower? Film strength is one thing, but i see the 50wt as being TOO much for the avg 300-400 horse motor.
Redline markets their 50wt for cars which run extremely high temperatures. Turbos run hot, especially on the track, but it's water cooled-- if you have overheating turbos, there's a bigger problem than oil.
