just wondering what type of gains some of you are experiencing and what the pros/cons are when upgrading from s2 to s3 cams - ie, shift in powerband, loss of low end, etc.

dynocharts would be helpful. thanks!

I dont have any direct comparisons on an VIII. I looked very intensely for some data. I have HKS280s to S3s, HKS272s to S3s, Comp 272+ to S3s, but no S2 to S3 comparo. The closest I have is my IX with S2s to the customs I have.

I've been wondering the same exact thing. I'm on S2s with a FP Red making 520hp. I'm about to step up to an HTA3586. I'm not sure if these cams will hold me back.

I have tested them on 2.0Ls and DO NOT RECOMMEND the S3 unless your powerband demands them. They will definitely not be fun below 4k. If it is a 2.4 then its a different story or you plan on making over 650whp.

I ran S2's and stepped up to S3's but don't have any back to back dynocharts. I will say that the S2's are really hard to beat for an all around cam that doesn't sacrifice much downlow and delivers up top. The S3's definitely give up some lowend power for gains up top, I think I will realize bigger gains once I go bigger on the turbo. My best trap on S2's and 40psi was around 138mph and on the S3's at 37psi around 141mph with a headwind.

+1 "I will say that the S2's are really hard to beat for an all around cam that doesn't sacrifice much down low and delivers up top"

Interesting. I was around 40psi with a v5, 65mm tb, s2 and a 6262 and my best was a 143. on 5 back to back runs, lowest being 138 I believe.

I recently switched to a ported stock intake but lost a motor before getting to the track. I can say the car was way more responsive down low, it was actually fun to drive around town again. I'm wondering if a switch back to the v5 and s3s would be better for et and mph with my long rod 2.4 being built. Im really not interested in dyno numbers just track numbers personally. I might try both combos out next year and see how it performs, if it hits anywhere in the 9s on a stock ported intake and s2s Ill be leaving it alone.

That's interesting to hear from you. I recall older posts where you said mivec cars even on stock turbo could benefit from 280ish cams because mivec keeps the low end there and the 280s allow power up top. Am I wrong that you said that?

I'm also interested...

I will be doing a High Compression 2.3L with a FP Black... I currently have the S2's. Has anyone switched from the S2 cam over to the S3 cam? Any input? I will be running a Stock ECU with this setup if it matters.

I just installed S3s in my car. I'll update this post when I have results. I have VD logs of the S2s and I'll try to limit other variables.

my guess would be that you will lose 200-300 rpm spool but gain 40hp up top given that your setup is ready for either cam.sorry i don't have any charts or reference for my guess.

Like these guys said, the power gains up top are pretty big, but we don't tend to see much loss low end. Of course it depends on your specific set up how much the powerband shift is. Idle isn't bad, especially with MIVEC cars. We typically don't recommend the S3 on smaller frame turbo cars, or 2.0L displacement...But, you guys like to prove us wrong and make good all RPM range power with our cams!
We always enjoy seeing dyno charts and posts by you guys! Thanks!

Tom (TSCOMPUSA) has done back to back tests with the S2s and S3s and the results were very enlightening.
