Looking for some clutch advice

First off, sorry if this or something similar is posted somewhere. I scanned the forums for the answer and couldn't find what I was looking for.

I'm hoping to get a little advice from the more knowledgeable members of the community. The clutch is giving way and it's time to replace it. I want to make sure I'm on the right track for parts and getting everything I need. I don't race the car, and everything is still stock. One day I may look to do something to it, but that is a ways off as we had an addition to the family recently. I want to move away from the stock clutch as its history isn't good at all.

In my research I keep seeing Exedy listed, and was looking at their EXEDY OEM Replacement Clutch Kit (MBK1001). It also seems that replacing the flywheel is the best idea as there have been issues related to that. Would I be best off going with the Exedy flywheel (MF04), or is there another suggestion.

Thanks for the input! I'm trying to keep it as inexpensive as possible while making sure I don't regret the purchase down the road.

Guess I should add, it's for a 2004 Evo.

If you want to get a way from the stock clutch, look into ACT's MB7-HDSS. It will hold better then the stock clutch and you can find it for a good price. If you are really looking to keep costs down then keep the stock flywheel (which is a good part actually) and have it resurfaced.

Sketch...

Ironically I know exactly how you feel, because I recently replaced my clutch as well and found myself searching for hours and hours looking for some good advice prior to replacing it.

Like you, I do not race my Evo and expectations to the MBC she is completely stock. I also DD my car 5 days a week.

I personally LOVE my setup. I went with the Exedy Stage 2 Cerametallic Clutch Kit (05952) with the thick disc. And paired it with the Exedy Lightweight Racing Flywheel (MF04).

The clutch is said to be able to handle some slippage and have great durability in demanding applications. Which I would definitely agree with since I DD my Evo and deal with traffic jams regularly. It can handle more horsepower for when you start going big too.

The pedal feel is slightly harder then stock, but definitely not bad at all. (I have a bad left knee and pedal feel was a BIG deal to me.) The setup I have doesn't bother my knee at all! It's a bit sticky out of first but after that very smooth. It is very responsive too! I have not had any lock out issues, even at higher speeds/rpm's.

I hope that helps! Good luck and remember that the proper install makes all the difference as well!!!

I just recently installed a clutch after some research. I had a 6 puck comp clutch that was mildly aggressive. I went to the ACT HDSS and its a great DD clutch. My wife enjoys driving the car now and I hear people getting a lot of miles out of them before replacement. Able to handle more power than the stock clutch if you decide to make more power down the road.

I went with a lighter flywheel (kind of a long story) but the shop I go to usually sticks with the stock flywheel.

I thought about going with that clutch as well, but I have a lot of friends that at higher rpms their ACT's have a lot of lock out issues. Which was a huge consider for me, for if I go bigger.

Now I realize not all ACT's have lock out issues, but I think its something anyone should be aware of can happen.

I heard stories about that but I went with anyways. I have a buddy with a IX that has had nothing but good things to say about it. The shop I go to used to go with the HDSS but I think they are testing out a new Comp clutch. I'll find a link

My Evo is my daily driver but I do drive it hard on the weekends.

That's cool. I am glad you buddy with his IX isn't having issues with his.

I daily drive my IX MR and get on her a bit BUT I do not race her. I love my Exedy personally.

Honestly it just comes down to the person. We are all different and like different things. To each their own.

I daily my MR.. I had a HDSS with LWFW. was ok. Pedal feel was a bit heavy in traffic. I just replaced my Clutch this week. When with the excedy twin disk.. OMG what a difference. Pedal is soft and I am in love again. Bit over kill for your set up but I am very happy with my decision.

I believe that is out of his budget judging from his posts.

You can re surface the flywheel, shouldn't have any issues unless it has issues when you have it out and inspect it.

It seems like there is talk with lock out issues with a fair amount of clutches, which is why I'm leaning towards the twin disk... More than inwant to spend but might as well do it right

The Comp clutches are a good clutch, I have heard that from several well known tuners and shops. Stick with the stock flywheel, just have it resurfaced as it is a great flywheel from the start and lightweight flywheels have their own issues. Clutch wise, I had an Exedy Stage 1HD in my old STi and the pedal was HEAVY. If you are looking for that stock feel or a little more firm I would go with the Exedy Stock replacement (Exedy makes the stock clutch), or the regular stage 1. Competition clutch is a good brand as well, I would stay stage 2 or lower as you start to get into the chatter fest and heavy pedal feel. In my opinion I would stay away from ACT, have heard too many negative stories about their clutches. Exedy or Comp clutch and stick with the stock resurfaced flywheel. Most clutches come with them but make sure you get a new throw-out bearing and pilot bearing with the kit as well. Good luck! Let us know what you end up choosing.
